They'll be eradicating US by terminating or advising against pregnancies. You'd rather never have lived? I wouldn't. I'm glad I'm here. Despite the hells I've gone through.

I think there will eventually be a cure for Autism and it will come in the form of a pre-natal treatment after genetic testing.
I don't think there will be a cure for a developed autistic brain (at least not for 200 years), the treatment would have to be during fetal development when the brain is still wiring itself.
If you don't treat the fetus, there might be a .001% chance of having an Einstein-like genius child.
However, what sane parent would risk having a disabled child?
The parents wouldn't find out until after birth and if its turns out to be disabled, then its already too late.
When the cure is developed, Autism will be eradicated due to parents making sensible choices before the child is ever born.

There are a bunch of genes on several chromosomes that can cause autism, but don't always do. The geonome project isn't likely to make a prenatal test feasible any time soon.

Don't panick right now.
If that's only 1% of Autistic people, then they have not found the ASD gene, they found one of the mutation which could cause Autism. Let's wait until they make different diagnosis according to which chromosome carry your mutation...
And for now, they seem to be only trying to help children with autism (they mentionned therapy, I know that for them it means "helping them becoming NTs but it also means helping them to overcome some of their difficulties and have a better life while still being autistic". It's not a blessing for everyone to be autistic, most auties/aspies are not savant and some are very disable.
You know, genetic tests on foetus are not very effective yet and there won't be any for autism soon...

According to my grandmother i already died once shortly after being born with a giant hemangioma covering most of my abdomen in my liver. They are usually not dangerous but one that big can clot up and stop bloodflow. It went away by itself after 1 month and to this day i have a microscopic scar of were it was. Im still not sure on the dying thing as my grandma hasnt said anything true as far back as i remember. Id much rather have died then that have to deal with this missery for ever. They say missery loves company, how does that work for autistics?
It doesn't. It accounts for 1% of the difference.
"Hearing that it's in one per cent doesn't get a lot of people excited," conceded Scherer. "But it gets geneticists really excited because there's a lot of genes involved (in ASD)."

You are probably depressed. Seek help. This kind of suicidal ideation can lead to your missing out on your whole life if you end up doing just one impulsive act. I know; I've been suicidal, and looking back on it, it would have been a really, really bad choice to go through with it. Getting treatment for depression can shorten the episode by quite a bit, especially if you're also working on whatever problem is exacerbating depression (which often includes lack of useful things to do, lack of goals to work toward, and exposure to long-term inescapable stress).

What's wrong with depressed people committing suicide? If they do, at least it solves their problems. There are too many people on the planet already; one less person is one less person using resources. I wish I had the guts to kill myself.
If you don't believe in an afterlife, this it how the possibilities look:
1. Kill yourself-- nothing
2. Live-- misery
3. Live-- everything gets better and you're happy
If you kill yourself, you can never undo it, and will never be happy. If you don't, you can always change your mind, and may be happy in the future. That's why you shouldn't kill yourself.
@Molecular_Biologist, are you actually suggesting that disability is something so awful that the mere chance of it is so terrible that being certain your child would never be disabled in this one particular way is worth never having another Einstein? Another Thomas Jefferson? You're seriously saying that autism is not only bad but a "risk" that isn't worth taking under any circumstances? I have a couple of things to say to that:
1. Social model of disability. http://www.livingwithcerebralpalsy.com/ ... bility.php Please at least read this with an open mind.
2. You think it's okay to change a person in utero into an completely different person?
3. Suppose we had a society that was 99% autistic, 1% NT. (I am prepared, if asked, to give a coherent explanation of why NTs in such a society would be disabled and marginalized and would have great difficulty functioning, while autistics would have it as easy as NTs do in this world.) Would you support the prenatal "treatment" of NT, to transform all NTs into autistics before birth?
4. You really think people like you should not exist? That it would be better if you had never been born? That it would be better if I had never been born? That you have the right to say that I would be better off nonexistent?
