I wake up in the middle of the night, or at least recollect it, no more than a couple times a year. Although this sacrifices experiencing dreams, and is somewhat dangerous as I have slept through a number of fire alarms.
I get about 4-5 hours of sleep now a days. I can't really nap because I have real trouble getting to sleep. I usually just spend 2 hours trying to get to sleep and give up.

2.5 hours seems like a funny number, sleep is usually in multiples of about 90min, because that is the time it takes to cycle through the different stages of sleep. If you wake up right at the end of a cycle you feel far more rested for the amount of time spent sleeping.
A couple companies have actually come out with alarm clocks designed to detect where you are in the sleep cycle and wake you up at the right time. Apparently they work pretty well. I have looked into getting one so that I can do the opposite, sacrifice sleep so that I can force experiencing dreams, but none of the designs let you reprogram them in this way.
