Does anyone here possess this? I have it with numbers; if I look at a string of numbers for a few minutes I'll remember it for years. I know all the powers of two up to 68,719,476,736 and I'm going to learn as many digits of pi in the near future. I don't need to use "memory tricks" to remember these numbers, they just appear in my head without effort and I recite them as they appear in my head as if I'm reading them on paper

I wish I did. But the way I TRY and remember things- prticularly words- is to imagine the picture of them in my mind.

I'm not good with numbers and visual stuff, but I have something similar with words. I remember with extreme accuracy conversations and things I read.

Same here, I can take a mental walk through the house I lived in when I was 5, as it was back then, but don't ask me my phone number because even after 3 years I still can not remember it.

I've got a great memory of the house I grew up in. Most of my dreams take place in it.

I have a really good visual memory. I have dreams about my past, like you wouldn't believe. I have dreams about all of the places that I've worked, waking up and still wishing that I didn't quit those jobs. I have dreams about college.

I have a photographic auditory memory. I sound out conversations in my head the exact way they were said. I can also remember a phone number said out loud by somebody, for months. Unfortunately, my brain has a very low processing threshold, think too unilinearly, and have trouble switching between the outside stuff and the inner thoughts. As a result, when there's noise or if I need to respond to something very fast, I may not reproduce things correctly from my memory. Many things may also take time to recall because of all the clutter that is sitting in my brain right now. Doesn't mean that I don't remember, I am just most likely unable to move past whatever I'm perseverating on at the moment.

Interesting, MathGirl - it's not the same thing, but it's easier for me to recognise people by their voice instead of their face and I can hear sounds most people won't. I wonder if that's part of having such a good memory for conversations.

I also recognize people easier by their voices. My visual memory is limited to very small details, so I remember people by small details, like the texture of their hair or the shape of their face from afar. I have an easier time recognizing people from afar for this reason. Visually, I usually can't imagine things correctly in my head until I see them in real life, though. Unlike sound, images are something I cannot accurately reproduce in my head, aside from very specific visual details. Like, I still remember the necklace that the psychiatrist was wearing during my assessment, and I can still accurately remember the texture of a grade 6 classmate's hair. Little things like that.

Wow, exactly! The images that stay in my mind are like a broken puzzle - I only get an odd shaped or striking piece - never the whole. I will remember some detail nobody normally notices, everything that was said and the name, but not the person. I've been in a few embarrassing situations because of that

Thanks for the responses

I used to have a photographic memory for books. I could remember the structure of whole pages. But something happened and I'm not so good at it now. But at least I can still learn numbers :)

I have this. It's really useful for things like sixteen digit credit cards. And if I read the results page in the Sunday paper, ask me 5 minutes later and I'll tell you the goalscorers, attendance, result of practically every league.

I have it too but with words or drawings, not really with numbers.

I have the same problem and it is really annoyed me.
