I never realized listening was hard work until I tried to jog and listen to an audio book at the same time.

I don't exercise - but I can't imagine the combination would work for me. I CAN read tuning out conversation and activity around me UP TO A POINT. My own activity is something else.

I get that as well. I think it might have something to do with hearing also being an important part of maintaining balance and coordination. Actively listening to spoken word (left brain) as opposed to passively listening to music (right brain) requires more effort so it takes away from your ears' ability to maintain equilibrium.

Agh, I see people in the gym (girls more so than guys) reading a book while working out, or chatting on the treadmills and I can't understand how they do it, as I just can't concentrate on anything else while I'm exercising.

I can listen to music or watch a TV, but conversation is difficult.
