Does this happen to anyone else?
I go through obsessions that last about 6 months. theya re pretty 'normal' like, pokemon, sonic the hedgehog, the simpsons, eastenders, the titanic ship, twilight etc. Once in the obsession, i learn every fact that i cna, buy every mechindise i can afford, and think about it constantly.
When i was obsess with titanic for instance, i leared every name, date and weight and times etc.
Once the obsession has passed, i forget everything i learned.
I repeat my obsessions, im 23 and feel a pokemon obsession is coming on.
But i havent truly obsessed for about 2 years, i have suffered depression and felt i have no interests. i felt lost. Now i feel one coming back im starting to feel more myself.
Can anyone relate?
ALSO. music is a huge part of how i feel. but i stronly HATE rnb and hiphop. It cant be on in my house or i go abit nuts...

OMG yeah! I swear my obsessions almost come and go by the week.

I mean in the past several weeks I've been obsessed with: the General Slocum, Shaun the Sheep, Disney Parks, and nuclear war films as well as other random stuff.

Though you and I probably won't get along as far as music. I don't mind RnB or hip hop depending on song, band etc. I also been getting into country music again which used to be an obsession of mine in elementary school. Jazz and showtunes I used to like but now I can't stand them anymore. I cringe watching musicals now.

Yeah, when I was obsessed with tatu a few years ago I knew pretty much everything about them, even their birthdays and family histories, now I have forgotten everything.

No, I never totally forget facts, due to my great memory. But when I'm not currently obsessed with a special interest, I will forget tiny nuances/facts that I could spit off with ease during the obsession period. (I Love Lucy, my biggest special interest, is the only exception.) So, my performance declines with declining obsession, but I still remember the bulk of the facts.

Perhaps the fact that you forget them means they're just not all that important.

Which is why I only obsessed over practical knowledge these days.

I often have secondary obsessions which come and go quickly, this usually applies to my car ones. But I do still remember everything I learn once the obsession is over.

I've forgotten most of the facts of my past obsessions. For example, when I was a child, I could tell you everything you wanted to know about wolves. But nowadays I don't know anything about them. And I used to know every single Pokemon there was back when the 1st and 2nd generations were new. Now I don't know hardly any Pokemon, though it's understandable given that they keep making hundreds of new ones every couple of years.

My obsessions tend to come and go as well. I tend to hold on to a lot of what I've learned from them (like national flags), but I can identify with that strange, empty vacuum that can appear when I've lost my previous special interest and don't have a new (or returning) one to replace it. But that can be exciting in itself, because you never know what might come in and fill that empty space!

I think I learn facts like that from rote exposure. I do not set out to remember dates or birthdays and such, but from constant exposure to it from reading about it I might remember these facts. So of course if I stop reading about the thing I will eventually forget it. I've never been the type of person who learned everything about an interest anyhow, and I notice when being described this "ability" might be over exaggerated.

I forget a lot of things that I've read about The Beatles, when they were my special interest years ago.

I can't remember everything, but I remember enough stuff about enough different subjects that people expect me to know just about everything. Case in point: a couple of days ago, my brother and his girlfriend were trying to name the members of "The Monkees," and came up with three of the names but were stumped on the fourth. Did they google it? Nope. "Let's call Another1. HE'LL know!" :lmao: I mean, my mind is a great lint-trap, but . . .I'm a better resource than google? 8O
