Some time ago I heard a radio talk show host joke that he was "born w/out the sports gene", and I just thought it was brilliant.
(And I think this refers primarily to team sports, rather than all forms of exercise.)

Before hearing that, I never really knew how to explain to people that I really don't get sports, I don't care about sports, and have no interest in watching sports, and no idea why most people are so into playing and/or watching sports. Now, all I have to do, if it comes up, is joke "Sorry, I was born w/out the sports gene - so I don't exactly follow sports".

I mean really - if you've seen one football game (baseball game, basketball game, etc.) you've seen them all, right? How can people sit there all that time and find it so interesting? And who cares who wins, you know? It's of absolutely no consequence whatsoever.

I'm guessing this has to be a common thing among people on the spectrum.

But then again, maybe sports can be a "special interest" for some of us?

What do you think?

I follow the local sports teams here - well, almost.

As for being athletic, I suck at any sport involving balls. I'm awesome when it comes to things that don't - I'm a pretty avid snowboarder and a decent cyclist/runner.

no [competitive] sports genes for me. not only do competitive sports totally bore me, but they also sadden me as well - all these people fighting each other when they should be cooperating with each other instead. but solitary sports i can get into. i like bicycling and i used to like running and swimming until arthritis got a hold of me and my joints.

I doubt if I would speak to anyone on my father's side of the family without sports as a topic.

I really wasn't that bad of an athlete when it came to sprinting and jumping. I was pretty bad at hand-eye coordination stuff. So I played some sports that relied on speed and agility and avoided sports that required me to process eye sensory information to motor skills like hitting a baseball.

I don't mind the occasional sporting event - e.g. some competitions in the Olympic Games and some tennis matches. I did follow Rugby League for a season or so, but I just ran out of steam: after a while, there was nothing new or complex to keep me interested. I had exhausted its value for me.

So sport isn't the meaning of my life. I really don't care about the professional summer and winter sports, except for tennis when it is being played in Australia. Anyone asking about the cricket (which is to Australia what baseball is to the US) will get a completely bored shrug of the shoulders from me. Don't know, really don't care.

So maybe I do have a sports gene, but it is definitely recessive.

As for the fashion gene ... NUP! I just don't get the fashion industry. B-O-R-I-N-G.

And horse-racing/gambling...again, NUP. The horse racing section of the paper and the betting agencies are a total waste of space in my universe.

And the night club gene - completely missing: never been to a night club, have no desire or interest in going to one.

I was born without the team sports gene. I like solitary sports like swimming or one-on-one games like tennis and squash.

I was born without the team sports gene. Everything else I'm good at.

I love sports, so I was born with the sports gene. I love to watch them. Playing them is a whole other story.

Playing is fun, watching is boring.

I have a student with autism whose primary special interest is football, but he seems to focus more on the statistics than anything.

I love running but that is about the extent of it. Team sports suck because a) I suck at coordination b) No one wants me on their team because of it.
However with running, I can beat a lot of people in races, so its really the only sport that I'm good at xD

Watching team sports live can be fun, watching on TV is boring. Actually playing is the best, although I have yet to fully understand the rules of some of the sports I'm most familiar with. It can also become a hassle when it becomes about winning than about having fun. It was one reason I grew to dislike team sports.

I've never really been interested in one-on-one games. I used to play badminton and tennis and was good at both of them (for a girl, everyone made sure to add), but if I had the option I'd rather play basketball or soccer.

I'm always up for a good game, but I don't like watching sports and I prefer getting gentlemanly excited when a goal is scored rather than shouting like an imbecile.

Sports can be fun, but it's not really something I feel naturally attracted to doing. I actually prefer team sports over individual sports.
