I feel like I'm putting on a mask whenever I have to take part in a social occasion. Like I have to pretend I enjoy it. Does it happen to other people here?

Look for the few people where you do not have to wear a mask. Or at least where you wear a mask that you enjoy.

I said once that everyone else wears masks, and I seem incapable, and that's part of my problem. Kinda the opposite thing, but still.

Yes. I consider it required equipment for work and family. Sometimes you have to basically misrepresent yourself to be a loving son, caring friend, or loyal employee.

I put on my full body armour, every time I go to socialize at a gathering.

I get the impression that I'm expected to, that people aren't usually fully themselves with people they don't know very well.

Likewise. I am slowly learning, though, through forced necessity. The mask doesn't hold up very long, but I have figured out how to put it on.

I'm also looking forward to this, if I can get all my costume bits together. :D

I don't know because Im still not entirely sure what it would be covering.

However i do feel like im a different person in different situations and around different people.

However it is quite possibly down to their different personalities, their interests, where i am, and my tiredness levels, and my mood.

But nevertheless i don't feel bad or negative about it.

This summer I had to release a skunk from a trap. For the purpose - on a VERY hot VERY humid day - I had to put on a plastic rain suit - full body - hood and mask.

Some social occasions involve a level of energy comparable to that horrible experience. Not all, though.

Last night I was looking back at a poem I wrote 8 years ago..

First line read:

"I am the invisible man I go through life with no one knowing my thoughts, no one knowing the true me, putting on a different disquise every time I turn the corner."

Didn't know anything about aspergers or autism back then...

I despise the masking. Mostly because I found out my ex girlfriend was just one big mask, basically. Oh sure, she's nice and all that. Except she isn't. She's (literally) a sadistic vengeful egotistical person.

Example? One time, late in the night, I wanted to hug her goodbye, because our date just ended. She refused, because she was napping in a "really comfortable" position in the seat. (We were in the backseats of a car, her mom drove us. Her mom is also the reason I couldn't kiss her goodbye instead.)

Later on, when I left the car extremely disappointed... She comes out of the car, gives me a really lame hug, the kind you get from people that have fake sympathy towards your situation. She told me "You didn't really think I'd let you go without a hug, did you?"

That cheered me up a bit... But later I find out her mom is BOILING WITH RAGE or something that I was "hug-raping" her daughter. Because I tried again and again to hug her... Her mom couldn't stand how horribly I treated her, and later I got lectures from my ex girlfriend about how I need to respect her and how it's all my fault her mom is now angry and that I shouldn't expect hugs if she's napping, etc etc. She repeated "If I don't want to hug then there wont be a hug!" several times...

Obviously this left me crying...

To sum it up in a more tidy fashion... She basically wanted a very loyal teddy bear in a relationship. We hardly met (Live in two different cities) and out of the 2.5 months we were together... We didn't meet for 2 months... Because of schoolwork, at least that's what I was told... Obviously she was lying... To sum it up even better, I was willing to spend any money necessary to come right up to her door, just to see her for 10 minutes. She, on the other hand, wouldn't have even got up to open the door.

Personal stories aside, I feel that masking is dishonest. You'll only get fake friends with masks. Not wearing a mask allowed me to meet my current girlfriend, whom I love more than anything or anyone else. Not wearing a mask allowed me to eliminate bad people from my life. Not wearing a mask allowed me to be who I am... And likewise, to find people who are like me.
