I've talked with my psychiatrist trying to explain what it is like to be me. I think introverts will be able to understand this quite a bit. Does this diagram kinda make sense with respect to having a a very "thin" boundary between yourself and your environment (noises, smells, social stuff, visual, etc.)?

I recommend editing your first post with the new link.

As for the barrier... When I hear "barrier," I think of the space I put between my self and the environment, which is usually a lot. Terminology aside, it does make some amount of sense, like when people refer to "thick-skinned" or "thin-skinned" individuals. We aren't as capable of processing environmental data as NTs.

That diagram made no sense to me.

I don't seem to have a barrier at all. I regularly "forget" that I am a separate entity with independent intention. Life is one big mushed together thing with fuzzy boundaries between all the parts.

Hi Kon. I think your diagram is good. I believe I understand what you mean with it. I think illustrating the barrier is a good way to explain it. An overload of senses can get to us because we don't always filter them out enough. This filtering that NTs do could be their barrier in blocking out the overload of the senses.

For me I wouldn't say that there isn't a barrier there, its just that whenever there's more than one thing going through the barrier my brain pauses until something happens and I can filter through the information. Information is blocked out all the time, but when it isn't is when I get problems.

Yes, filter may be another way of describing it. I feel like I have a real crappy filter (e.g. thin boundary), especially emotional stuff involving other people (hugging, giving/getting compliments/criticism, etc). I've always felt "icky" and kinda violated when people get too close to me. This quote kinda describes it well:

"One person with high-functioning autism has described “instinctive attempts to correct a feeling of having been ‘engulfed’ ". She explained that “when my sense of ‘existence of other’ . . . became too intense, I felt . . . swept up and lost in it but also suffocated”.

Could you explain the middle part?

The top and bottom I understand and relate to.
When I'm on stimulants sensory stimuli isn't feeling like I'm being bombarded at.

The border is kind of like your level of tolerance right?

Maybe I should do something like this for my psychiatrist.

Good diagram. I like how the top & bottom show more of the either / or type extremes: the environment can be all you can focus on or your inner world is all you can focus on, and the NT people have been able to balance both sides. This really explains the outcome of what a lot of researchers see as under-connection between parts of the brain in autism. Gotta have the parts of the brain talking to each other to maintain that balance.... anyhoo.... sorry, I watched a vid about that & thought that was cool! Um... I like the idea of trying to draw out how you experience the world. I think it helps explain to other people and gives you yourself some insight as well!

Not sure NT means balanced. From what I understand, most of their perceptions are their brains filling in what they expect to see, based on a small amount of the actual environment that gets through.
