We learned in my special ed class that this is called dysnomia or anomia. The "it's on the tip of my tongue" thing. Professor said, jokingly, that it happens to the best of us every now and again. I was thinking, what if it happens all the time? Not so funny, then...
My friends think it's funny that I'll say things like "Yesterday I went to...that place...where, you know...you get that stuff to...you know...the place." (Accompanied by hand gestures/flapping as if trying to push the words out.) Or with remembering names: "You know...that guy who is friends with that girl? You know...that guy. The tall guy? With the ..." I tend to laugh it off as part of the AS, but don't think they quite get how frustrating it is to have it happen so often. Slowing down seems to help with the recall as does taking a couple deep breaths.
Especially embarrassing in groups of strangers. Happens more when my stress level is already high, but isn't always stress related. Online posts are easier because I can Google for the words I need.
(42 typing corrections needed for this post because of letter reversals--thank God for spell checks.)
