Quote:
It's a global initiative to raise much-needed funds for autism groups in over 40 countries. By shutting down social networks for one day on November 1, we hope to encourage a greater understanding of people with autism who find social communication a challenge.

To join, simply make a donation to receive a CHAPP (charity app). The CHAPP spreads the word, gives a shutdown badge to wear online and adds your picture to a global mosaic of supporters, next to the celebs.

Here is a short video which explains more about it:

Will you take part? I just donated. I don't really use facebook that much anyway, but maybe it can help other people understand what it's like to be a little "on the outside"?

The UPS strike many years ago made me very aware of how much some of us depend upon UPS -- I had to wait a few weeks to get my new air mattress -- but just as with voting, I think this kind of thing is a deceptive and complete waste of time and energy on the part of the typical participant.

I have to agree with leejosepho. Facebook is one of the few platforms I come across really well with. It's actually easier to be social because of it's format.

I would prefer it if people remained silent for one whole day and could only grunt point and gesture. That would be more realistic. And easier on my ears to boot, lol...

I think this is a silly idea, and encourage everyone to take part in Autistics Speaking Day instead.

Sure, people who have no pride are naturally going to resent those who feel differently.

Well, then I don't like you either. Seriously, what makes you so angry about my expressing myself?

Facebook is gonna be shut down for a day! What will I do with the games I play? Didn't they think people will want to  play their games?

I guess I was getting bored with the games again anyway. Darn.

So it's not Autism Speaks behind this, like everyone said it was?

I think if they really wanted people to feel like autism, though, they'd make it so that sometimes you can talk, but the only words you can really use are ones listed on your profile under your interests 8)
