Hi,

I was wondering if there were any other aspies who dislike holidays? OK, who am I kidding, I hate holidays. They throw off all of my routines and are always so stressful. Lots of groups of people, LOTS of hugging and touching, gifts to pick out, etc. It is a nightmare for me.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Thanks,

Johnathan

Assuming by "holidays", you mean "Christmas", then I happen to like it a lot.

Good point. By "holidays" I mean: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Birthdays, Christmas, New Years, Valentines Day, President's Day, Easter, St. Patrick's Day, Cinco Demayo, pretty much all holidays as you may have gathered.

Ahh, I see.

Become a Jehovah's Witness. From what I hear, they don't celebrate any of those. Then you have a religion backed excuse not to participate in any of them!

That is an excellent idea ... accept I am not religious. Since it is election season, I guess I could start a third party -- The Know Nothings live on! The first platform could be government subsidies for those who want to hideout in an undisclosed location during holidays. Oh, and we will cut government waste, except for the things we don't consider waste, like holiday subsidies.

Family holidays aren't fun. My 12-year-old cousin whom I love dearly usually spends those holidays with his mother's side of the family, so there's never anyone I can hang out with.
Stuff like Halloween, St. Paddy's Day, and New Years tend to be more fun since I can choose my company, but when I can't make any plans for those days and have to spend them alone, I do get depressed.
I'm more anxious on family holidays as I don't enjoy holiday food. Turkey, ham, potatoes, etc. are difficult to choke down, but I hate being singled out as the one who won't eat, even more. I don't enjoy the long car ride, and I can never find stuff to do.

All of the above.

Socialization on steroids. Seasonal mass insanity of the majority.

I sense a stress induced shut-down is imminent.

How I feel depends on the holiday, really. As a Pagan, some hold spiritual significance for me.

Most family doesn't live close enough to bother me during holidays, so that isn't an issue.

Depends on how. I try to avoid partiesw whether there be a holiday or no. A holiday where the family [very nuclear] stays home and enjoys one another and eats good eats is different.

I observe them, but celebrating them requires too much energy and effort.

Holidays never bothered me except Thanksgiving always felt weird because in my school when I was six and seven, instead of my class going to lunch, all the special ed classrooms come to my classroom where our portable had a kitchen and the teachers cook and serve food and we all eat. We did this before Thanksgiving break of course.

I always loved Valentines and Halloween and Easter and Christmas. I liked the decorations and I loved getting candy and cards and new presents. Plus I would love classroom parties. Maybe because there be no school work and it was free time. There be movies or games or books to read or doing anything you want.

But my family never did anything for St Pat's nor my school so it was a normal day for me. Same as other holidays. But Independence day, I always loved the fireworks.

My family never went anywhere for the holidays but yet on Thanksgiving they have people come over and we all eat in the dining room. We used special dishes and silverware and to me it was no different except the dishes we were using and silverware and the food we were having. Then I go off and do my own thing again after I get through eating. On Christmas, we had some relatives come over and I hated giving up my bedroom but I always loved Christmas nonetheless because of presents. I always opened my gifts and play with them. There was one year when we went to Montana for Christmas but it was something I wanted too so it didn't bother me.

Yay, a fellow Grinch. :D

i hate them as well - in fact I haven't celebrated ANY festivity for almost 5 years. I just don't see the point - I can see whomever I want (if I want) to see at any other time in the year, in a less crowded place. I'm not religious at all, nor am I sentimental so blindly following the customs of the folks around me (mostly religious), be forced to socialise and endure the crowds and the noise - no way.

I dislike holidays. It helps that I stopped going to most parties, but it still disrupts my routines.
Plus I think its just an exuse for companies to sell us stuff.

Right-o! Nowadays it has mostly turned into commercialisation, spending money on the items rarely wanted just for the sake of spending money on the items rarely wanted! Followed by mutual pretending of liking the items rarely wanted.

Each to their own of course - some people find an un-intelligible pleasure in participating in them, somewhat a conundrum to me.
