Last summer I began having these movements that looked exactly like tics (like you might see in Tourette's syndrome). The thing is, every twitch was preceeded by a slight discomfort; usually a sensation of pressure or of being poked. They are rarely painful, but when they are, it feels like being jabbed with the sharp end of a pencil. Is this typical of a tic disorder, or maybe of a sensory processing problem? Or is this universal to everyone?

I have tics and get the pressure feeling before but they don't feel painful. Just terribly uncomfortable and kinda weird. The only time it hurts is after lots of the same tic.

To my understanding tics usually are preceeded (sp?) by a sharp feeling like that. The trouble is the literature on tics is written from an outside-in view, so the internal sensation is not often mentioned. I read all that on a web page by someone who had Tourette's, but I can't remember enough to find that page, ATM.

Also, interestingly, I remember someone describing how meds to reduce tics (like haldol) would reduce the muscle twitch, but not the feeling before it. So they could feel themselves ticcing internally, even though there was no physical movement.

I have some ticcing, in spells, but can go for months without any.

Wait, so muscle twitching is a sign of tics? huh, I get them all the time.

I'm wondering the same thing. I get lots of muscle twitches and certain muscles feel too tight sometimes but I can't relax them.

What's the difference between tics and muscle twitches or are they the same?

Tics are somewhat purposeful. I heard someone describe them as 'a voluntary response to an involuntary sensation'. Similar to that anyway. There is an element of control to it. A bit like if you don't blink for a while you can feel the need to blink in your eyes. I'm not very good at explaining...

That pretty well covers it. It's like the need to sneeze or blink or scratch an itch. You can hold in the urge for a little while, but not indefinitely.
