Hello everybody,

I've got a multi-disciplinairy project running called Gross Neighbourhood Happiness (rough translation) at my school in answering the following question:

How do you judge the wished for increase of value (Happiness) if it's about concepts as "quality of life" and "social development"?

It's based upon the concept of Gross National Happiness (link).

The project site is sadly only in Dutch: http://www.designinsociety.nl/

What are you're thoughts and (possibly) answers to the main question?

I posted this topic because I thought I would be interesting to explore the concept and it's outcomes, I'm not in the project though.

Cheerfully,
Wallourdes

I'm not entirely sure what the question is, but I'll try. At the moment, I'm unhappy because I'm living in a foreign culture. I simply can't focus on much of anything else if I don't have the "mental security" of living in my own culture, and I'm worried that being here is denying me opportunities for my future life. As I'm under the age of majority, I have essentially no way to fix this problem in the near future, which makes my unhappiness with the situation worse. I'm looking for some sort of validation that all this trouble is worth it, that I'll actually be able to get out of here in the end... Unfortunately, life rarely gives such things.

I don't know quite what you understand under "social development", but I think I'm generally okay socially. I don't have very high social needs. I have trouble finding people to have real discussions with, though, I don't really fit into my age-group.

Thanks for the reply Michael_Stuart, I guess I explained yet to little.
It's on national scale, it's basically about how to measure Happiness - specifically on points as "quality of life" and "social development".

Thanks for the personal story though, I hope everything turns out in adjusting in the culture or atleast finding your way. Your always welcome to visit WP with us fellow aliens :).

Cheerfully,
Wallourdes

Would you be able to give an explicit definition of these terms?

Quality of Life isn't finely defined as project specific, but as a general concept an example in medical care:

On Wikipedia I found a extensive definition(link).

Social development isn't project specific too, it's a bit harder to define as seen in the link:

It's a big project

I am happy with my life right now, because if I wasn't, they I wouldn't be happy about it.
