Over the last few years I've become increasingly aware that I learn much more quickly by reading/studying in isolation. Does anybody else feel like this?

For example, whenever I'm studying in a group situation and we're working through a handout, I will read ahead through the handout and lose interest in the group and their tedious discussions. Then I'll grow increasingly impatient and annoyed as the group very slowly catches up. I've reached the point where I just want to take away the notes and study them alone. I think part of the idea is to enjoy a discussion and to hear other people's views and insights, but I always feel they're not offering anything new and it's just unnecessarily slowing down the pace. I basically just want to read and I absorb the material much better that way.

I'm also thinking this may be why I got such terrible grades in school but excelled in university, where the emphasis was more on self-directed learning.

Anybody else feel like this?

It's about being bothered by outside stimuli. Makes sense.

I agree with you 100%. I hated studying with people in a group. But I really found it useful to go with 1-2 friends to study in a room but each studies independently. It kinda forced me to study because I hated studying some subjects. Also I never knew how to take notes and I learned how to organize stuff/notes, when to take breaks, etc. from other people but studying by talking with others just confused me. I preferred to study on my own but be with 1-2 people. I would get pissed though if others made sounds around me. I needed total peace and quiet to study.

I prefer working alone but it's because other people my age aren't very accepting of my ideas and don't let me participate at all.
