OK, if I am shown an object for 1 minute, I'll be able to remember what it was 5 minutes later. However, if I am presented with 6 objects for 2 minutes, I will not be able to remember them a minute later, isn't this odd?

It seems like it's the amount of information presented that I often have a hard time remembering not anything else. So if I were to do a memory test, I'd have trouble.

Why don't you just think of the 6 objects as 1 object?

Isn't everyone like that? I had to memorise numbers in an IQ test and the bigger they got the less I remembered.

Some people may be able to recall more objects better than other people. This is probably a poor short term memory thing.

Would you not be able to remember one single object out of the six at all? I might be able to remember three.

Information overload. I can concentrate only on 1 thing at a time. I can't multi-task either.

I have trouble with that too. It could be information overload, or a form of sensory problem, or you could be a auditory or kinestetic learner

Try these tests.

have someone else be the tester to choose words and objects

Auditory test:
first remember 1 word spoken
wait 10 mintues to repeat

then remember 3 words
wait 10 min to repeat

same with 6 words

if you do better on that, you may be an auditory learner rather than a visual learner

next test
put 3 objects in front of you
feel them and see them for 1 minute
have the tester take them away

wait 30 min, and have the tester put 7 objects in front of you, three of the objects which were the ones you saw and felt.

pick the three you saw and felt

do the same for 6 objects for 2 minutes
wait 30 min. put out 13 objects
pick the 6 you saw and felt

if you do better on this test, then you are kinestetic learner.

This information is valuable because it will telll you how you best retain information and could guide you into what career would best suit your learning style

I did this memory test: https://www.testmybrain.org/consent_all.php?exp=36

My score was below average except for the verbal part, which was above average. I did a little better at the shapes. But I did poorly on numbers. I can only remember four at a time it says. But I think it's closer to three. I also have the most impossible mobile phone number to remember.

This rings a bell with me but more to do with doing things. Or remembering the things that I must do. One thing is easy, I can just do it. But if I am presented with more than one thing then it can cause my brain to overload and I just can't concentrate even on the one thing.

Same here. I got above average on: shapes and vocabulary but I could only remember 3 numbers. I was even worse on matching shapes and numbers. I got 37 and the average was 50.

Related - long back my wife looking for employment took the Post Office test which involves incredible arrays of numbers. Did well.

Me, I focus down, cannot multitask, cannot hold more than three phone numbers in memory any given year - if that.
