Is sudden bouts of anxiety an AS thing? I know we can suffer quite badly from anxiety and some situations make this worse, but what about sudden bouts that just happen?

I tested quite high for anxiety in my assessment so I have a very high base level of anxiety but what I have noticed is that all of a sudden it gets much worse for no reason. This can last for an hour or two before the terror and panic subside.

I'm not sure I would say I have bouts of anxiety that just happen. I do think sometimes the emotions that cause my bouts of anxiety, which can be very much like the ones you describe, are complex, and thus so baffling to me that I don't understand exactly what I am reacting to. I don't know that the same would be true of you.

I do know that many people with autism suffer from crippling anxiety, to the point where Temple Grandin has called it our dominant emotion.

Definitely, I get anxious for a lot of reason most of them are not really good reasons but usually I at least have a reason for getting anxious. Sometimes however i will be home and just get twitchy for no reason, Get that feeling in my gut and my hands get shakey and I wander around the house like a caged animal. If my kids or SO bug me I may snap at them for the smallest thing.

I think the "sudden bouts that just happen" for no immediately-apparent reason are internal chemical reactions or releases or "pressure pop-offs" related to on-going mental and emotional stresses. My levels of "terror and panic" at those times are not usually as great as yours sound, yet those waves do often come unexpectedly and surprise and baffle me ... and my worst ones usually happen while I am trying to just sit quietly and relax.

I find that my anxiety tends to be at its worst during the evening hours. I learned in my high school psychology class that the hours after sunset tend to have some sort of psychological effect on people.

Yes, same here, and someone recently suggested I stop eating anything after sunset. When I do, my BP goes out of sight.
