My 3yr old son may have some form of autism

Hello to all that reads this. I am new here, just looking for some people to talk to that may know a little more about autism that myself and my husband do.

We have 2 children, my husband and I. My son is the youngest of the two he turned 3 just a few days ago. Since he was about 1 1/2yrs we knew he was a little behind in things as far as speech and comprehension. Doctors always told us he was fine and he would catch up to where he needed to be. Since then he hasn't changed much. I dunno what to do when all a doctor says is that he will catch up and to just give him time. He is very weird about food, he will only eat certain things and mostly eats with his hands. He runs and runs back and forth in the house, and mostly the things he plays with are cars or anything with wheels and that he can spin, he will roll and play with the wheels for hours if we let him. He screams at the top of his lungs for no apparent reason constantly. He still doesn't speak a word besides "momma" but he doesn't associate "momma" with me. He rarely looks at people when they say his name. Its hard to try to potty train him cause he doesn't know what the potty is or what going to the bathroom is.

I don't know if from what i have wrote here anyone has any suggestions on what I can do to help him a little more. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Have you checked into any local community resources for early learning? They will do developmental screening. Also sometimes the school district has headstart/preschool programs which can help.

I read recently about a rare classic autism developing 3-6 months of age, rather than the more common 16-18 month developed autism.
So yes I do think he has autism. The parenting forum will be the best area to talk to parents with autistic children.

Autism developed anytime after birth is actually pretty rare, pensieve... It's usually not really blatantly obvious until two years old or later, but you can look back at home videos and see that the autism was there in the infant. 3-6 months would probably be Rett syndrome... which is a rare kind of genetic disorder that includes autism plus a bunch of other stuff... is that what you're thinking of? (Rett's only happens in girls, though.)

sounds like something is going on. I agree that he needs early developmental testing. You can go to "babies cant wait" which is resource for things like this, they provide money for expensive work ups and therapy and they also act as a resource broker connecting you with the people and organizations that can test him and give him what is needed to help catch up.
My peditrican said nothing was wrong with me and I had alot wrong with me from brain injury caused by a defective infant formula that contained lead and lacked certain essental mineral salts needed for brain development. I was later diagnosed with PDD with autistic charateristics. But just because your baby doc says nothing is wrong, doesnt mean anything.
You need to trust your intuition on this.
