This looks just like the "about to laugh" face to me! I cannot pinpoint any of the differences, which can be terribly awkward, especially as I tend towards being a "jokey" person.

Short of actual tears or sobbing (which can be unfortunately late), what are some specific differences between these two? Does anyone else think that they look alike?

edit: sometimes i feel like i'm on a " how to raise your ferret"board  so how do they look like when they're sad?

The about to cry face is alittle differnent but similar, but the eye brows draw closer together and in the about to laugh face the eyebrows lift. Also a person who is about to cry will hold their head slightly down while when someone is about to laugh their head lifts. Sometimes a person who is about to cry, their eyes get a little watery or moist

one thing is for sure, noone notices when i'm about to cry. I can remember some horrible occurences when i had been unable to speak and holding back tears, and someone said: but do you even care? is there any feeling in you? ( once at my son's school when they were being atrociously unfair to my son, and once my husband, who was talking about leaving me. )
my "about to cry"face apparently translates as indifference to them....unless they are all sadistic $#@#$%......

I can't usually tell the difference, either. I just wait for the laugh or the cry. Meh.

I think sometimes it can be really hard to tell the difference. I've had a similar issue with my father, when he was getting angry he sometimes had an expression that looked like a semi-smile and I thought he was in a good mood and smiling, while it was the opposite, and unfortunately for me I couldn't tell the difference. I got in trouble quite a few times because of that.

Sometimes the difference between crying and laughing is not so obvious either, they use this ambiguity in this Pink Panther movie, it is pretty funny (clip of Dreyfus making Clouseau's funeral speech)

It could be that your face isn't looking like they expect an upset person to look like. I know that I can be hard to read when upset (unless I'm having a meltdown).

There's also an "about to sneeze" face which looks a lot like those, too.

I have trouble telling the difference, too. Once, my teen aged daughter and I were unloading a moving van together. I had carried something inside, and she was standing in the truck and pushing things forward for me. When I came back out, she was lying on the ground, slapping the dirt with one hand, and appeared to be laughing really hard. I asked her what on earth she was doing, and then she sobbed, "I fell off the truck!" :?

I have the same problem, and even when people are laughing I sometimes get confused and think they are crying. Some people I can tell the difference... Others I honestly can't tell if they are laughing or crying. I assume they are laughing because everyone else is.
