What is the process of getting a diagnosis in England?
Hi everyone. I'm Maddy, I'm 17, and I live in England. I'm pretty sure that I have Asperger's, for a variety of reasons. Either way, I would like to know for definite and hope to seek a diagnosis soon. However, I'm pretty nervous about it as I don't know what to expect. Would I first go to see my GP? What would happen after that? I was just wondering if anybody could share their experiences with me so that I feel better informed. Thank you for your time

Here is a link that has great information for the process in England.

It sound pretty identical to what we do in the US. You will probably get to see a psychiatrist after you see your GP. I suggest a Neuropsychiatrist if possible. The psychiatrist will ask you questions and test you for the condition. He may prescribe medications for Attention Deficit Disorder, Depression, or Anxiety if you have these related conditions. From there you might see a psychotherapist to help with your social skills. If there are any support groups for teenagers with autism in your area where you can talk to trained professionals and peers with Aspergers, I highly encourage you to attend.

Hi Maddy, here's just a short potted history of my process. I'm 32 by the way.
Went to see my GP a little under two years and she referred me to a local psychologist. After about six months I got my first appointment and we talked about getting a referral. I saw the specialist in May of this year and by July had a diagnosis confirmed.
I know that some people have had a harder time than this, but my thinking throughout has always been that I'd like to 'know' either way, so I stuck to my guns. Total time from first seeing the GP to getting a diagnosis was just under two years which, for me doesn't seem like such a long time, but was worth it.
Hope this helps
