How many of you with AS head bang during a meltdown? If you do, why do you do it?

The reason I am asking this is because my psychologist is convinced I have Borderline as well but all the 'symptoms' he is affixing to this fit my other diagnoses...

No I did not. My NT cousin did this though and I always thought it looked quite painful. By the end of his tantrums I was convinced he was just screaming because he banged his head.

I banged my head on the crib when I was little. I don't do that anymore, and not just because I'm no longer in a crib 8O

I don't recall ever headbanging.

However, it is possible I actually did headbang but forgot about it due to all the headbanging...

My soon to be step-son (11 year old Aspie) used to head bang. When he and his mom lived at grandma's he used to do it to get his way. I called his bluff on it and he has never done it again.

I do. Less and less over time (fortunately my movement disorder seems to make it harder even though it's not really a voluntary act) but I used to do it very frequently. It's a very common autistic way to self-injure. Some doctors think that any woman who self injures in any way is borderline. That's not true though. It's even often counted in a totally different category than regular self-injury.

I used to bang my head against the wall when I had meltdowns at school. I'd wait until the other kids were gone and then I'd lightly bang my head against the concrete wall.

Self-injure in other ways but I don't hit my head unless it's on soft surfaces.

Oh banging one's head on the floor reminds me of a story that amuses me for some reason even though I know I was being made fun of.

I was banging my head on the floor in the dayroom of a mental institution (was within my first few days in one ever, for suicidal behavior). And... this other kid came up to me, and he said, "Are you a head banger?"

I had really bad language comprehension at the time, so I said "I don't know." (I think that was my stock response to questions I was too afraid of getting wrong to answer.)

And he said (to everyone) "Hey look at this girl! She is banging her head on the floor and she doesn't know if she's a head banger!"

I still don't know why I find it funny, I should be annoyed at him or offended for making fun of me or something, but it still comes back to me as an amusing memory rather than an offensive one.

It releases beta endorphins. I would elaborate if I could but I can't right now.

Banging my head actually makes me feel better because the physical pain (though I barely feel it) distracts me from the emotional/ sensory pain.

I would bang my head on our brick wall out of frustration...as hard as I could but I could never knock myself unconcious. I must have a shock absorber in my head like mountain goats and woodpeckers. My parents either just ignored or made fun of me.
