Psychiatrist or psychologist ?

I am looking to get insurance and try to find a person who specializes in autism. I live in a relatively small community, so it may be difficult. Does any one here have any recommendations as far as the type of specialist I should look for…. Which in your opinion would be better for a dx???

I see you are in Western New York. Contact Autistic Services. They have a list of professionals in the area. That's where I started.

Here's a link:

Psychiatrist. But I agree with an autism specialist.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who treat psychiatric/neuropsychiatric disorders that can be treated with medication. Few of them do any non-medicative therapy and if you go to one with something they can't medicate, they tend to give you medication anyway or get annoyed.

There are people who specialize in autistic spectrum disorders and AS, there are very few who are familiar with adults though. You need to find someone who specializes in ASD/AS and has experience dealing with adults.

I just sent them an e-mail. I hope they respond. I am trying to get Medicaid now so I can see someone; I just want to know this isn’t just in my head or some other disorder. I have been diagnosed with many in the last 20 years but none of them seem to fit. The medications they tried to put me on made everything worse. I stopped taking them and got better. Or I should say back to normal. :)

They responded to me within a few days. They also responded to followup emails I never got the impression they were trying to blow me off even though I was an adult.
