Strange Gait? How did you run when you were a child?

You may not know right off hand, but have you been told that you walked funny or even ran oddly?

I've been reading about how children with ASD run when they are young. Before they were told how to "correctly run."

I used to run with my arms straight and back or straight and at my sides.

I think I used to do that. Then I played sports, and I got better at not doing it.

I had a tendency to move my arms too much and still do not know how to breathe properly when I run but I have dyspraxia. I don't really like to run and don't run fast (not fast at all), I do not know if my gait was strange (when I walk, it is) but I think children tend to look akward when you watch them, especially young children.

I know that someone showed us cartoons about the movements the body makes when one is running or walking and we had to do them slowly to learn the differences. May have helped :)

I ran with my hands folded together behind my back because I was too self-conscious of the way my arms flung about when I didn't put them in that position. There was only one PE teacher who tried to correct me when I was in seventh-grade--and he was a substitute rather than a regular teacher.

I was a fast runner, though, so the other teachers probably figured as long as I could run at a reasonable speed I could do whatever I wanted with my hands.

I kind of skip when I walk, or I sometimes stomp.

I had severe asthma as a child.

Run 5 steps. Gasp uncontrollably. Go sit down. At least until several years of allergy shots - a big deal in the 60s. I had a pin cushion for an arm.

I usually stand with hands behind my back. When I was a child, I used to walk like this. Somebody told me I looked like a jerk, but I really didn't (and I still don't) know what to do with my hands.

I walk oddly, because my mind is programmed to move smaller body than mine (I'm tall). So I forget to bend my knees and I don't know what to do with my hands. I can't run. It doesn't mean I run slowly. I can't even do it correctly. PE classes were like a torture to me.

People don't understand how it's possible to can NOT run. I always ask them: Can everybody swim? No? So some people can't run.

Neighbor girl up the street used to tease me, "I can wiggle my butt when I walk too."

Mom blamed it on my shoes, of all things (I insisted on wearing strap-and-buckle dress shoes). I think it was perhaps because I held my arms rigid. I still think people look silly swinging their arms like an orangutan when they walk, but when in the monkey house...

As far as running, I never was fast or graceful. It just feels awkward. I guess I just never learned to do it properly.

I usually walk without any arm movement.

Same. I have to make a conscious effort to swing my arms. Or I did, when I was self-conscious after kids made fun of me for walking like that. I don't notice or care now.

I stand with my hands behind my back too. Sometimes people point this out to me. "You're standing with your hands behind your back." And I'm like... so? Is there something odd about standing like that? I honestly don't know. XD

Does anyone have vids of a normal walk and an aspie walk? I'm curious, I want to learn how to walk correctly.

I run on my tiptoes. I'm splayfooted. I don't move my arms when I walk.

Same here. I have to actually make a conscious effort to move my arms as well.

Somebody: You're standing with your hands behind your back!
Answer: O RLY?
Or: Thank you, Captain Obvious!

I don't know too what's odd with it. Maybe people prefer to use a lot of gesture or hug their friends? I have to watch them again.
Sometimes I play my cell phone, it probably looks better. But how long can I do it? Not all day!
