When I went to the doctor some days ago, he said that I couldn't possibly be AS because "People with Asperger's Syndrome show signs of mental retardation and are speech impaired. You are too talented and normal."

Huh? I thought Aspies were more intelligent/talented then NTs?

Sounds like you need to find another doctor, particularly one that knows more about PDDs

"...individuals with Asperger's have normal or above average intellectual capacity..."

"...There is no clinically significant general delay in language (e.g., single words used by age two years, communicative phrases used by age three years)..." (DSM-IV)

Hi. There is stupidity! nonsense and tommyrot! There is lack of knowledge.

I'm sorry - my english is very bad:( I'm from Poland, I have AS probably, I'm dyslex and I have much problems with foreign languages:(
I'm educator. I'm teaching children and adults with ASD. I'm making diagnosis too.

There is also very little consensus even among the experts as to what may differentiate between AS and HFA which is why I tend to use those terms interchageably. My son was labeled HFA because of his language difficulties yet now there is some debate that perhaps those wiht AS can have speech delays also. Relying on outdated stereotypes though- people on the spectrum are ret*d - doesn't seem very accurate. Which is also why some of us shy away from getting a formal diagnosis because of the inaccuracies.

According to the DSM IV manual used to diagnos any person with ASD; normal speech development prior to age two is a REQUIREMENT to fall in the Asperger's catagory.
Get a new doctor:-)

Mental retardation? That's f***ing stupid. I think you should find another doctor.

btw, aspies aren't more talented or intelligent than NT's. They just think differently and are more focused on fewer things.

I wouldn’t listen to doctors that have little to no direct experience. Every one has a different story of how it is.

Someone told me that A.S in adulthood according to there doctor is a schizophrenia.

I should not type when I am tired, it ends up in error grammatically. Annoying!

I think that ultimately it is ideal that people diagnosed with A.S or other forms of autism let go of the label. It’s one of my social goals here, to argue against labels N.T or otherwise.

Your brain is your brain, you’re not a label.

Mental retardation?

How offensive! I'm not mentally ret*d at all, I'm smarter than most people! I'm certainly not speech imapred, either!

I think he's got some mental retardation, he should go and shoot himself.

*mutters about doctors who don't know basic information about the things they are meant to be diagnosing and who know less than their patients*
I'm dealing with one of those at the moment.

People with AS are mentally ret*d? I don't think that doctor has read anything regarding AS. If you have a low IQ, you can't have AS. That's what the doctor should be saying. Maybe this doctor's reasoning falls under one of these two categories:

(1) What sort of problems does this doctor have? I can't imagine a professional being that naive, even if they do not understand AS that well. I can understand things like information regarding a speech delay, because it deals with something requiring remembering numbers (age 3 is usually involved), but something as concrete as this? I think the doctor has some sort of problem processing information appropriately.

(2) If he was this naive about AS, I would think he doesn't know anything at all about AS, other than having heard the name "Asperger's Syndrome." I imagine maybe the doctor felt too ashamed to say that he doesn't know much about AS, so he's going with an archaic autism definition.

In either case, this is not a doc for you.

Actually, I didn't talk until I was almost 2. (Failed to mention that to the doctor though.)
