Has anyone else noticed, that the spelling and grammar on this forum seems to be, on average, at an infinitely higher level than pretty much every other discussion forum on the internet? Socially, yes, Asperger's and Autism may be a severe burden, but in many other ways, not so much. You're all very intelligent.

I am amused at the contrast between your post and this one.

Thank you! And yes, I have noticed, and delight in the fact. Most denizens of the internet are practically incomprehensible, aren't they?

Yes. Not everyone around here has great spelling and grammar, but overall, I think the quality on WP is higher than on most other parts of the internet.

Honestly, I believe the grammar and written fluency is a bit below average. It is certainly below what I would expect of those with AS.

The abysmal state of grammar and fluency on many forums is due to their young user base. This forum caters to a wide age range.

Any errors in grammar, spelling, and/or written fluency on my part are usually due to at least one of two factors.

1. I don't care.
2. I was tired.

I think on average, spelling and vocabulary are good, but a lot of us seem to have our own idiosyncratic take on grammar. I know mine's a bit odd at times. Also, punctuation can be poor, but I see poor punctuation everywhere, not just here.

Forums tend to be places for casual posts, more like a conversation than an essay. Correct grammar is not always expected. I know I sometimes will write very casually, omitting commas or running on, but it isn't because I don't know how to use proper grammar, it's because I don't always feel it's necessary.

My grammar can be a bit off online and my word choices occasionally imperfect.

I used to stress about it until someone paid me to write for them. Now I just figure if I'm not getting paid, why stress about it?

I used to spelling/grammar flame people back in the early 90s, but after falling afoul of the rule "You will screw up if you flame someone else for screwing up" I realized the futility of such an endeavor and chilled the heck out.

Not so much very intelligent as focused on details. We excel at pedantry, and sometimes that is a good thing. I can proofread my employer's annual report and find many of the mistakes - that helps.

But content is more important than spelling and grammar. Just imagine a grammatically perfect edition of Mein Kampf, without any spelling errors. Would that make it a great work? I suggest it wouldn't.

Well, my spelling and grammar used to be better. I wondered for a while why I so often use adjectives as adverbs, and realized that it was just the way MANY in the US speak, I have always tried to ignore such garbage, but it is difficult. Meanwhile, I am trying to use adverbs properly.

The grammar, and vocabulary, of the average American is quickly going down hill because:

1. People are exposed to VERY bad language.
2. They are allowed to pass school without learning.
3. "Teachers" are allowed to "teach" things they know NOTHING about..

Teaching was once something that IMPROVED over time. NOW, it gets WORSE! The BAD "teachers" "teach" others who, failing to get a job, may elect to "teach". The union will actually FIGHT to make sure they get hired! Once hired, it is hard to fire many of them.

My spoken vocabulary used to be better ALSO. I certainly understand FAR more words than I generally use. That is mostly because so few seem to understand "bigger" words. There, I am trying to pepper my speech with more words that I didn't use before.

With regard to the different opinions of this site, some are real perfectionist types and some aren't. And some writing here is definitely better than most, and some is some of the WORST you may see on the internet. But this forum DOES allow many levels of people on, and some don't speak English as their first language.

People who use UPPER CASE for emphasis are a long way down the slippery slope...

Actually that post is the right reply to this post. Usually Aspie are obsessive and so we are probably obsessed by grammar too. Being less social also is a good way to avoid slang. As for "not so good grammar" you should note that there are many not-english speaker in this forum (like me) who are more likely to make mistakes.
