Friends/lover. You'd put in the qualities you'd want in a friend or lover and out pops a person with those qualities. LOL!

There's a movie called Surrogates starring Bruce Willis that reminds me of this topic. People had surrogate androids that went out and socialized for them while they stayed in their houses or apartments and experienced what their android went through mingling with other surrogates.
You could program your surrogate to be your ultimate dream date if you lived with this technology.

Wasn't that why teddy bears (stuffed toy bears) were invented? It's my understanding that the Elmo toy talks. Apparently some schools in Korea/Japan have robotic school teachers for certain classes so machines that make friends are here/almost here. Words: games like The Sims. There are computer programs which can carry on aspects of what is perceived to be a somewhat normal conversation with some persons. As time passes, small improvements will likely be made so what your question hints at is coming to humankind soon - perhaps at a toy store in a mall/ an IMAX theater nearby.

I'd rather just be friends with the machine.

No. If I made them, I'd be responsible for their lives, and that would be too big a responsibility.

What Cassia says. I mean, we have issues with overpopulation now, why would I want to create more people that I couldn't then destroy?

If your machine created dodo birds and dinosaurs, though...

Ehh, dodos maybe, but humans didn't destroy dinos so it would be a little unethical to bring them back to life.

I thought you meant for me to have a machine at my side that assists in friend-making. Somehow I do not think that would work out very well. To create a friend would be boring. They would not have a past. Where would they be placed in society? Maybe they'd worship me. They'd just be like a pet dog.

No, because the "friends" would be friends with the machine and not me. They wouldn't give a crap about me.

I would want an update that enchances my social ability though.

It would have to be like this: I would create a "friend" when I needed something like figuring out why there is no water in the house. Then once they took care of the problem, they could be deactivated until the next time I needed something.
I guess I don't want friends. I want minions.
