Hi there,

my motor skills seem fine, but one thing is strange:

when i go swimming I usually swim like a frog, but i can't swim the crawl, this seems to be too tough for me. Swim the crawl, there are two different things to do at the same time, first the ryhtm of the hands, and then the coordination of the feets, thats too much i think.

Do you have the same?

best regards,
anton

Hey I can't do crawl either. :) I always thought it's because I have wimpy shoulders and arms. It seems such hard work. Other styles seem to be more "energy saving". I always have trouble with coordination and complex movements (say dance or Kung Fu).

yeah, i broke up dance courses three times. :-)
seems as if my motor skills aren't perfectly as those of the others, but usually i don't notice any difference.

I don't swim so much as flail uncontrollably. Most of the time this keeps my head above water. On a good day I might acheive a little foward momentum. :D

Might not be a coordination issue. A lot of people have trouble with the crawl because the try to keep their face out of the water so they arch their back and it drives their feet deeper into the water and the whole thing falls apart. It's really important to keep your head, neck and back in a straight line and swivel your head on your neck.

I learnt to swim when I was about 2 or 3. I had some swimming lessons then and in England I had a couple of years and then I gave up because every term a load of people would move up and I would stay behind. I'm not cut out for fancy stuff like the crawl :)

I was a competitive swimmer for years, the fastest one on my team. But I had a very difficult time coordinating the arm and leg movements. I had very strong arms, so mostly I just left my legs kind of dragging behind me and I did just fine. When I was sprinting or competing, though, I really had to focus on coordinating those movements.

Funnily enough I just went swimming today for the first time for ages without having my 2 small children around.

I can swim breast stroke pretty well, but no I can't do crawl either. I vaguely remember just about being able to do it when I was a kid, but it was never really comfortable.

Generally though I'm pretty well co-ordinated (well, with bigger physical actions anyway) and good at sports - well above average in sporting ability at most sports in fact. Apart from maybe golf, which I'm now tolerably good at (just) but have had to work at.

I know how to swim but it is one of my biggest sensory issues. The second that I'm above waist height in water I'm flapping all over the place and am physically exhausted in no time. Me in the ocean is the ultimate.

I can swim, but I'm not very good at it. And I don't even like swimming - if I get any chlorine in my eyes, they get all bloodshot and sensitive and I can't put my contacts in.

I'm very good at swimming. People sometimes ask me if I take lessons, but I taught myself. It was difficult, but I was determined to learn. And I did.

I swim pretty well using just about every style, having taken lessons when I was a little kid, and half-teaching myself from watching Olympic swimming around the same time.

I've never swum at all in my life, and I don't want to, it's scary. 8O I'm scared that I'll drown, and also I can't stand at all getting water in my eyes, even in the shower.

Coincidentally, I have just arrived home the local swimming pool. I am far from an exceptional swimmer, but I am quite a sterling diver.

I used to be a competative swimmer back in highschool. I was always pretty slow in comparison to people who competed in general. I dont really recall ever having problems swimming or else I woulda never gotten into it.
