Haircuts are so stressy for me. I guess that's ridiculous, and I should have gotten a grip on it by now, but I'm better in a dentist's chair than I am at the barber's.

I hate the mirror. I hate the question, "How do you want it?" I never relax, and feel rigid the whole time. I hate the barber looking at me, and standing so close for TWENTY minutes. And when Im walking out I always feel my absolute maximum weirdness.

Totally agreed. At least at the dentist I'm in a private space and can lie down and close my eyes.

Yeah. I hate the barber too. It really annoys me. I get restless, and I hate the feeling of being trapped in the chair. I hate the way that they always criticize me for waiting too long between haircuts. I hate the thought of how many other heads their tools have been used on.

I agree, I never enjoy haircuts.

I hate it too, because;

- They touch my head and I'm sensitive to touch and extra uncomfortable with head-touching.
- I'm scared of water so don't like my hair being washed.
- The special basins hurt my neck.
- They try to sell me overpriced hair-damaging products I'd never use.
- I don't use shampoo or -cone conditioners, which is exactly what they do use.
- They use hair dryers and harsh brushing so ruin my hair, and hurt.
- They are hair dressers yet seem to know F-all about caring for hair.
- I have to look at myself in the mirror for long periods of time.
- I want to move, and I want to tidy up the cut hairs, but I can't.
- They always ask what I want done to my hair when I'm not girly enough to know.
- They insist on small-talk and chatting about topics like celebs and reality TV.
- They ask what I'm doing at the weekend as if the haircut is for a special event rather than just a necessary part of grooming.
- I never know how ridiculously expensive the hair cut is going to be and if I have enough cash to pay.
- They're all so girly and the younger ones look down on me for not being girly or going in casual rather than dressing up for a haircut.
- This is a thing I have to do alone, I can't rely on my partner or friends to come with me.
- They offer me tea or coffee, posh stuff, I feel stupid turning them down but donno what to do if I wanted some.
- I travel a while to go here specifically as they're good, they seem to think this is strange.
- They tell me off for cutting and colouring my own hair all the time.
- I try to ask them for advice on my hair and they never seem to understand.
- I've had some VERY bad hair cuts from bad hair dressers in the past, one cost me about £2k when I modelled.
- My stylist is the best at her job, but can't see how ugly she looks covered in make-up, fake tan, fake nails and bleached hair.
- The salon looks like this, which offends my eyes, lots of bad wall paper and gold tat.
- They remember me...which is never a good sign.

Yeah, I can do dentists appointments without any problems, and I actually like gynaecologist appointments...two way more scary, personal and invasive (! !!) appointments, but hair dressers appointments are just plain horrific for me. Thus I only go once a year or so.

If I walked into that place they would say,"Sorry the bathroom is for clients."

Lol, it's not nearly as fancy as it looks, especially the one in Monkseaton which is the smaller one I go to...but still, I think they tolerate me because they think I'm 'special' and lucky I don't look as scruffy or like an anoraked weirdo as what I once did.

That all sounds goood!

"Anoraked!" Haha good word! It's not in the Urban Dictionary!

I hate going to hairdressers too. I find myself procrastinating for months before making an appointment. I feel tense, I fear the small talk, I don't know where to look and I never manage to explain what I want well so I end up walking out upset, with a haircut I hate.

And this why I began cutting my own hair last year and it turns out I'm good at it so no more hairdressers for me! :D

I don't like haircuts either. That's partially why I grew it long. When hair gets long enough you can cut it yourself easily. Even layers are not too hard to do. I've been cutting my own hair for 4 years. Curiously my dad (suspected Aspie) always cuts his own hair, even though it's pretty typical male length. He said he got only one haircut done by other people in the last 20 years, when he was very ill. I never asked why. It's definitely not for saving money as he always had six figure income before he retired.

Long hair's popular for men now, why not give it a try? Even chin to shoulder length are pretty easy to cut by yourself. And you get the perk of not needing to cut it for a year or two while you grow it out. :)

I hate haircuts too - although I can't relate to the bit about prefering dentists, they're even worse.

Last time I went I was brave enough to tell the girl washing my hair that I didn't want the head massage (*shudder*) and she didn't do it. I find that if you tell them you're concerned about moving your head too much when you talk they don't try to chat as much.
I pay quite a lot for mine because its short, and if they get it wrong there's not much you can do to sort it! I do often get frustrated at hairdressers repeatedly asking me if I'm sure I want my hair short... really? that short? you don't want to grow it out? YES I AM SURE.

True... I wore my hair long for forty-five years... but now I live up North and I wear a hat all the time, even in the house, and it makes my hair hurt if it's long. Fashion woes!

I cut my hair myself using a shaver with a #5 guard, so all of my head hair is 5/8 inch tall. I like it that way because it is short and I can do it myself. If you like short hair maybe you can get a shaver with guards and do it yourself. I don't worry about "style" or anything I just run it across my head everywhere so it is all the same length. They sell hair trimming kits at stores. That way you don't have to deal with the stress of someone else doing it and you are in control.
If you like short hair you might want to try it.

I wet my hair, towel-dry and then use the #8 (1 inch) all over, then a #4 (1/2 inch) up the back and around the ears, followed by a shower. It takes about 10 minutes once every 3 months or so. A decent mains-powered trim like Wahl will last for years, and costs about the same as two barber-shop cuts. I hate having my hair cut by anyone else.

Seconding the "get very short / long hair and cut it yourself".

If not, you could write down exactly what you want and hand over the paper to the barber. A picture might work too.

Yeah, that's why I wear mine really really short. If I wear it long I get annoyed with it and it feels too heavy and hot. I just can't stand having to have some opinion on current hairstyles (if I was interested in hair I'd have become a hairdresser), and then make polite small talk. Very small talk. Smaller than I would with a 6 year old. Really all I have in common with most hairdressers is that we both (supposedly, I still maintain it's not been sufficiently proven) belong to to the same species. I don't mind them touching my head but sometimes they touch my neck, which is major bad.
