For some reason, the noise of fingernails on a blackboard doesn't bother me at all. I have only meant one person that is bother me. Every time a tell someone a noise bugs me, I asked them what noise bugs them. I stopped asking the question because everyone always said "fingernails on a chalkboard" and they said it in a way that inferred that I would agree, but I don't. When I stopped asking the question, my friend starting explaining that whatever noise that it was that bothered me was "like fingernails on a chalkboard" to them. It really bothered me that she'd compare it something that didn't bother me that seemed to bother everyone else because it was just one more thing that makes me "abnormal".

Is anyone else NOT bothered by the sound, and does it have something to do with being autistic?

It doesn't bother me, most other sounds bother me just as nails on a chalkboard would bother most people.

I thought chalkboards were a thing of the past, so I wonder how many people really have experienced that sound. (It never bothered me.)

I personally don't find fingernails on a blackboard any more annoying than any other high-pitched squealing sound. But I think it IS thought of as a fairly universal annoyance...enough so that's the phrase has become synonymous with anything that's extremely annoying.

Just shows you how old my school is.

We joke about it being a "great grandpa school".

I've heard the noise on the internet, it doesn't bother me.

Same here, it's scraping and irritating, but doesn't drive me nuts.

I just put some aluminum foil over the windows in my bedroom to keep the bright city lights out. The windows are single pane and a touch drafty so the foil was getting moved a bit and making this TINKING SOUND. I very nearly had a heart attack (I'm a healthy 29 year old) from the stress this caused.

Other horrific noises that will drive me to insanity:

A hair dryer in the morning
A vacuum cleaner that I am not running
Constant whining machinery nearby
Someone else's computer fan running

Some things just turn my blood into fire and I must stay quiet about it to not seem insane.
