There have been a few threads on the board regarding best cities to live in if one has asperger's, but all the best cities seem to be located in the North and cold. Best cities would include locations with special schools, a more accepting atmosphere and access to services and knowledgeable professionals. What are good cities to live in with a warm climate all year for those on the spectrum? Some have said Austin, Texas seems good, but to avoid the rest of Texas (due to the high rate of intolerance to anyone outside the norm). Is this the general opinion of those on the spectrum who have experience in Texas? Is there anywhere else we can migrate to for warmth, services and acceptance?

What about having Asperger's means you have to live in a warm climate? I have it and I love the cold. :P

It's simply a personal preference. I currently live somewhere cold and hate it and would love to move somewhere warmer.

I hate the cold and miss the ocean.

But warm cities by the ocean are crowded, expensive or both.

If all you want is warm, there are still places in the South West that are not crazy expensive. Small rural areas with nothing to do. Quiet. Like maybe 100 miles from any significantly large town.

If you are an adult with AS and alone, I have found that that the "tolerance" of the locals is irrelevant in most cases.

Wherever I go, I am practically ignored by everyone from the fundamentalists to the hipsters. No-one bothers to get to know me good enough to the point where they would criticize me.

I am like a ghost, invisible. Even the most vile people won't summon up the energy to persecute a ghost.

Houston is similar to Austin socially. Dallas and San Antonio are more conservative than Houston and Austin. East Texas is very conservative, as is west Texas (except for El Paso and maybe Lubbock). South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley are liberal.

Portland Oregon is ALL about being weird. The whole city smacks of Aspies. It rarely gets below 30 degrees here but it is hardly warm. The winters are fairly dreary and 40 degrees which can be bone-chill'n. It is worth it to me though to live is such an accepting place...

The only thing warm in Portland is the coffee

Personally I'd live in SF if I had the money. I think it's just warm enough! I hate heat and humidity. The perfect outfit for me is jeans, T-shirt and hoodie :)

Special schools suck. My mom went and checked out a handful in my city for me and compared them to prisons. Public schools that are willing to deal with individual needs are waaaay better. I went to public school and was allowed to walk out of class to speak to guidance counselours whenever the hell I wanted, teachers who denied me that could face losing their job because of my IEP.

I live in Florida and I think it's okay as long as you stay away from idiots on the road. I live within walking distance of one of the most beautiful beaches in the state, not that I care. Unemployment sucks here so I'm kinda against raising teens here (they might need masters degrees to get into McDonalds).

I have heard good things about San Antonio, Houston and Austin. Mostly in that order. I personally have thought about wanting to go to Arizona since I have friends (and enemies) in AZ as well as nearby in California. I like that it's less humid out there and it's less developed than Florida. I like being close to Walmart but I like having lots of land to mess around on.

basically, if it is a nice place to live [re: lots of public amenities such as good schools, good nightlife/entertainment/social enrichment/arts, temperate weather, good public transit, etc.] it is going to be expensive and crowded and only for the higher classes, in general. for everybody else, there is always the 'burbs and the sticks. the big cities no matter where, are going to be more accepting of diversity than the rural parts. los angeles is pretty diverse and pretty warm, that might be a good place for the OP to start, there are still less-expensive places [the 'burbs] down there if you are willing to drive 2 hours to get anywhere.

Southern California is expensive. Even if you find a place to live, the cost of living here is out of control...fuel is on a steady creep towards $4.00 per gallon, & basic necessities get more expensive every day. Yeah it's warm, but due to the mild climate, it's very crowded. Traffic is a nightmare, & it's not just around the city center. The unemployment rate is fairly high. Yeah you might find more affordable housing the further away from Los Angeles you go, but finding a decent job with a decent wage is no easy trick. Even though I have a job, a lot of my friends & acquaintances are out of work..have been for some time, & the job market is still unstable. If you're an Aspie, I feel it's even harder to get a job & keep it. There's a lot of NT personalities competing for the same positions, & usually they get hired first because they know instinctively how to play the interview game. Education is another mess. Funding for schools is being cut left & right, & it's at every level from pre-K through universities. Layoffs are coming for anyone employed at schools because the state is broke. They've already cut library aids, nurses, janitors, etc. Pretty soon, students will have to teach themselves. Personally, I can't wait to get out of the Tarnished state.

I don't recommend anyone to move here, unless you have an unlimited amount of money to live on, & you don't have to work. It's much the same in the Central Valley, & farther north.

Good luck!
