Hello fellow aspies,

I found that the TV show Community is worth watching from an observational viewpoint. It also consists of meta-jokes which I immensely enjoy. I just thought other aspies might like it due to it's incredibly blunt nature. Also, it demonstrates various tactics used by NTs to manipulate people. This can help you defend yourselves. I almost forgot to mention that one of the characters has Asperger's.

The name of the television show is "Community".

I wouldn't consider a sit-com as a guidebook for life.

i find the characters on Community are pretty extreme stereotypes. i'd be cautious against thinking their behavior is typical.

I've never seen the show. It just didn't seem interesting from the ads, so I never went out of my way to watch. I am just going by what has been posted in this thread and have garnered an opinion, thus. It sounds like a melodrama that is satirizing the idea of community. Perhaps, the name is meant to be ironic.

Isn't that a given?

I think I just went overboard with sharing my interests with others. Sorry.

Don't be sorry. I'm glad you shared it.

As for it being a guidebook, everyone (including the op) is right that a sitcom is not a guidebook. But sometimes sitcoms can show us insights into real life through humor. Seinfeld anyone?

Based on the pilot episode only, it does not look like a show that has any basis for truth. I can't even say the show is an over-exaggeration of NTs. Unless this is one of my "aspie" traits coming out, I don't think most people in the world are out to manipulate other people. However, the show is highly enjoyable.

Now, that being said, there is a lot of manipulation that goes on out in the real world. But it's usually altruistic manipulation. But that's a whole different story.

Don't be sorry. I know how you feel. I wrote a post a while ago about the movie Legally Blonde. There's a scene where the kids are sitting in a circle on the lawn getting to know each other and then Elle Woods starts off on this long tangent about how orange is the new pink. I used that scene as an analogy of how aspies see NTs at times. It was just a cute analogy to describe how alien NTs can be to us at times. While some people understood what I was saying, there were others who took it very literally and told me that they didn't think the characters in the scene were aspies.

But, you know, this is a community full of people who take things literally and often miss subtle dialogue so, sometimes we're not going to understand what you're trying to say. You might have to get further detailed with it so we can understand.

I love this show Community! It is beautifully written, and cast, and acted. Every show has a "message"... and there is a goodness, something deeply simpatico, about every main character.

I love Community. But it's a sitcom, and the characters' behavior is exaggerated for humor. I don't think of it as an extremely realistic depiction of neurotypical behavior.

It has John Oliver in it, right? If so, must watch.

I love the humor on "Community". And while it's never really confirmed that Abed has AS, I do think he's one of the most unintentionally accurate portrayals of AS on television...(bland facial expressions, poor eye contact, comparing movies and television to real life, etc). :D

Wait - NTs don't do that?
