Thumb sucking

I am well, well over the age that I should have given up sucking my thumb but it provides me with a sense of comfort. I also have a blanket that I run my fingers through and rub on my face.

Does anyone else do/have the same?

I sucked my thumb till I was 8. Then I got all obsessed about germs, so I stopped.

Not I, but my younger daughter now in her 30s still occasionally does. As I understand things, thumb-sucking in the womb is "practice" for later breast-feeding ... and then we can all just guess why we might do some of the things we still do after that.

Thumb sucking ceasede. I am still incline to bite fingernails which might be in part a transference.

Nope. The closest I ever got to that was big toe sucking in the crib, which I can still remember. The toe just tasted so good. I can still remember the flavor nearly 30 years later!

Am I they only person who still has a comfort blanket?

You are not alone. Thumb sucking and blankies are not just for kids.

My parents dipped my thumbs in hot sauce to make me stop at age 5.

I was never a thumb sucker, or had a comfort blanket. I had a comfort stuffed animal as a kid. Now my comfort thing is my mp3 player. I think everyone has a comforting action and/or thing but some are seen as more socially acceptable than others and some people may not be able to identify theirs.

I think its an NT thing as well. We are all born with a sucking reflex. Some unborn babies suck their thumb in the womb. That being said, if it makes you feel good, its only a natural thing, so don't stop. The only issue I can see is possible dental problems.

I don't think I ever sucked my thumb. I tried it and I didn't like it.

I think I stopped around the age of 6-7ish.

I sucked my thumb until I was 10 years old, when I forced myself to stop. I actually had to work pretty hard to quit! Do I think this is an Asperger's trait? No, not really. I think it can be the same, or at least similar for those who are Neurotypical. However, there is some evidence, so I have heard, that suggests that sucking thumbs is actually calming to the mind. That's probably why children, and even some adults, suck their thumbs. Of course, that could mean that the "thumb sucker" for lack of better term, is more prone to anxiety...

I still do and I'm in my mid twenties, I have a pillow I rub my face on too, like a comfort blanket only not.

My parents tried hot sauce on my thumb when I was younger but I kept on despite the taste.

I usually don't tell people that.
