Is there anyone here, who isn't and has never been a toe-walker?

I find that I can only walk on tip-toe (like when I am trying to be quiet or something) for a few seconds before I get tired.

Anyone else?

I land with my heels when walking, but on the balls of my feet when running. So sometimes as I'm switching from running to walking, I walk on tiptoe for a few steps. (When walking, my heel hits first and then the rest of my foot hits. When running, I never bring down the rest of my foot.) I should note that I'm almost always barefoot. When running in shoes, I usually find that it doesn't work and I have to run like I walk. Yet another reason why I hate all footwear.

Yeah. I don't really walk much anymore, but I frequently walk on my toes when I do.

My nonautistic brother (not exactly neurologically typical though -- nobody in my family is -- just not in a particularly autistic direction exactly) toe-walked as a child.

I pretty much only toe walk, still, at least when I'm not wearing shoes. When I do wear shoes, I do sometimes but not consistently.

The exception is cold hardwood or stone floors, which actually feel kind of comfortable. I dislike the sensation of warm floors and carpeting.

Maybe I don't understand what toe walking is. What I used to do, even as a young adult, was walk around in my barefeet at home with only my toes and front of my pads touching the ground, and the rest of my arch and heel way elevated. I thought of it as dinosaur walking. I enjoyed stomping around like that for some reason.

If it's just walking with a front loaded distribution, then I still often do that. I just don't dinosaur walk very often at this point.

simon_says:
Yes, the "toe walking" being talked about here is exactly that: walking with the heels elevated sort of "like a dinosaur". I've read it is somewhat common in children with AS.

I very much walked on my toes from earliest childhood. By the time I was in high school, I had been trying for a long time to stop and was slowly succeeding, but I didn't eliminate it completely until around my freshman year of college. It earned plenty of teasing and nicknames like "Skippy", to be sure...

I've never been a toe-walker, except for when I'm trying to walk quietly.

I do. Like to be barefoot, too. Sometimes go barefoot outside, but usually there's too much risk of broken glass and whatnot.

I voted yes, even though a 'sometimes' answer would be more actuate. I never walk on my toes if I'm wearing shoes, but if I'm barefoot I will sometimes, and pretty much only at home. but more than that, I stand on my toes, whether I'm wearing shoes or not, if I'm cooking, or waiting on someone or pretty much any time I'm just standing around I stand on my toes, sometimes all the way as high as I can, other times, such as if I'm in public I'll just barely have my heels off the ground.

It never occurred to me until recently that it wasn't normal.

It is called "toe-walking" or "walking on tippy-toes", for lack of an easier term. Most people who do so are actually walking with the weight on the balls of their feet, and not distributing weight onto the arch and heel. In extreme cases it is equine, with the heel clear of the ground. In babies and toddlers it can look very much like walking on the toes, but rarely in older children and adults.

I never did it much. The only time I ever do it is for very short periods of time when I'm barefoot now and then. What I've been told is that I'm very "stiff" when I walk. I don't think that the way my feet touch the ground is unusual though.

I used to, but not because it felt more natural or the sensation of walking normally bothered me. I just wanted to see if I could walk like certain animals do because I was fascinated and obsessed with animals and animal anatomy at the time. It didn't really last long and I only did it at home.

I never walked on my toes. However, when I wore shoes with short heels I would walk on my heels until I got yelled at. ...And then I would do it more when they weren't looking.
