What sounds make you cringe? I'm not talking about sounds that merely annoy you and raise your anger levels, I'm talking about the sounds that instantly strike a deep-seated chord that leads one to shrink back and/or turn the head and/or grimace in instinctive revulsion.

For many people, it seems the 'scratching on the chalkboard' action is a cringe-inducing sound.

But it doesn't bother me. Does it make anyone else cringe?

The only sound that *really* makes me cringe is the rubbing/scratching of vinyl or similar surfaces.

The sound of silverware against plates, or plates clacking together. For some odd reason it makes me cringe even more when I have cavities in my teeth. I couldn't stand to do the dishes before I went to the dentist last year.

Silverware scraping against plates
Hammers banging on nails
Balloons popping

For the last two I wouldn't say "cringe", rather "wince".

The sound of any group of people talking, especially if they are behind a door.

Fingernails on a blackboard doesn't bother me either, I have seen this a lot in AS.

Anyway, the noise of my dad sharpening knives is like the worst sound in the world. I also really dislike the sound of plastic spoons scraping paper cups.

The hum of a CRT monitor or TV. I don't hate it, but it does annoy the crap out of me.

I have a list of sounds that I can only describe as "crunchy" such as stiff fabric, (thick towels or damp denim for example) but it would take me an hour to write it all out.

The sound of people grinding their teeth. I don't think I'd heard it in years and years until the last couple of nights, I haven't been able to sleep due to the sound of my boyfriend grinding his teeth in his sleep. It seems extremely loud and instantly makes me want to start screaming to drown out the sound.

Nails being clipped.

The sound of moisture in someone's mouth/nose etc. When I try to watch the news or a talk program all I can hear is the news anchor/host breathing and that gross sloshing sound of saliva when they open their mouth and begin to make a statement. The sound of a gulp, dogs or cats drinking water, people slurping or sipping beverages, chewing with their mouth open at all etc. Sucking on lollipops or whatever.

I can't remember ever actually hearing it in person rather than on a movie or television show or some such, but I have never been bothered by the sound of nails on chalkboard.

Table saws and dentist's drills. They sound the same and they make me cringe.

the sounds of violence [war-making, fighting, slapping, kicking, punching, et al]
chain saws and other things with yammering buzzing 2-stroke engines in full-cry.
people crying. babies screaming.
rap music.
thumping one-note bass in rap music.
out-of-tune instruments [i have perfect pitch]
screeching anything, like in some rock music, tires burning rubber on pavement, et al.
deafening aircraft overhead, the kind that shakes the house.
firearms discharge and fireworks. for various reasons, audio recordings of same are not bad.
jake brakes on semi trucks.
any sudden noise, either sharp thumps or pops or bangs or booms, or sudden-onset static-state noise.

-KISSING. Oh, I can't STAND it; even a peck. It makes me want to implode. 8O :x 8O :x 8O :x 8O
:wall:

-Certain types of voices. I know people can't help it, but some extremely nasal and/or overly crackly voices are just a pain to hear. I won't listen to certain radio programs because of this.

-Balloons popping; more of a 'phobia,' though.

Oh, you can't make me forget, thumping music! I don't mind loud music so much, but I really had music that is "thumpy" if you know what I mean. Trust me, you don't want to hear an example. Once I was in the second row at a concert and it was in a small stadium, the opening acts' bass was SO loud and thumpy! I was thinking "Oh, I won't be able to handle this for 2 hours". When the main act came on, the bass wasn't all that loud, so it was OK.

scraping chalkboards

crying babies

dogs barking (esp puppies yapping)

usually unexpected higher-pitched (screeching) noises.
