Am in the midst of formulating my "Am I a member of the Aspie Club" list, and have a small question:

Sometimes I can get intently interested in a song, to the extent where I will play it about 30-50 times in succession a night, every night, for up to a week.

Is that a form of obsession or can anyone relate?

Yep-with me, it's currently "Left outside Alone" by anastaciua...which I ifdentify with VERY strongly.

Other times it's been entire CD's-Jeff wayne's musical version of "War of the Worlds" , "Adiemus-Cantata Mundi" and my faviorite songs (and bits of the score) from the first two Pokemon movies spring to mind.

I'm the exact opposite. I only need to hear someone play a song twice in a row and it's a major sensory overload. Because I'm quick to remember precisely where every word and every sound is, it just feels like it's being burned into my brain. I prefer to hear different music all the time, which is why I hate commercial radio and only listen to the three specialised community radio stations we've got here.

God bless the Internet, you are always bound to find people who'll understand - thanks everyone ;)

Currently for me it's 'Sleeping Sun' from Nightwish. Woke up with the song in my head...hummed it at work...came home, walked the dog, hummed it while walking...now it's playing through headphones

@muchacha: That's interesting, never heard of your experience being described before.

I do both!

I play the same song over and over if I'm fixated on it... and run it over and over in my head.

But if it's not a song I'm fixated on and I'm forced to listen to it repeatedly, it drives me nuts. And I hate commercial radio as well for that reason.

Yes!! ! Usually 'pop' music drives me barmy, although there are very few 'classical' pieces that annoy me. I generally become obsessed with entire symphonies - recently it's been symphonies we've played in Youth Orchestra, eg Sibelius 5, Mahler 1 thus far. Also some of my favourites recently have been Sibelius 3, Mahler 4, etc. Though i do also become obsessed with other works, not just symphonies!

I'll do that too, but it's usually a particular succession of songs...lately it's been the first three songs off the Hum album, You'd Prefer an Astronaut. It's like the first three were meant as one song played in three different parts. Play them over and over and over and over and over again. It's wonderful.

It is a form of obsession; but you aren't alone, my friend. A lot of Aspies do that, including myself. 8)

I always have a song in my head. This I repeat over and over.

Also if I hear a song that I like, I do tend to play it many times

Hey, I did that too!

I had completely forgot about it, but after reading the post I remembered that
once I recorded three songs from the Zooropa album by U2 on a tape, and I heard it lots
of times.
