Thinking someone has stopped conversation I step in when mom says they just take a breath when I rattle on and on. I tend to always do this!! !! I don't breathe I just talk and talk and talk. :-( I wish I knew how to talk. :-( I asked mom if maybe we could go to the mall since I had a 20% coupon for a store and needed refills for my Wallflower device since I only have 3 left and I only have 1 hand soap left so I was looking to spend about $20. She said she didn't know and I was rattling. I said oh. I hate this!! !! I need someone to teach me behavior and how to talk/behave etc. in an NT world!! !! Not someone prescribing pills or telling me be myself!! ! Where is MY Behavior Rehab center! OH NO WAIT, I DON'T HAVE A DRUG PROBLEM! SINCE IT'S BEHAVIOR IT'S ALL ABOUT " BE YOURSELF" WHICH IMO IS sh***y ADVICE CONSIDERING MY PAST MISTAKES SHEESH!! !! ! Any good books on "talking?" or socialization of sorts? I enjoyed Aspergirls and Guide to AS loved both of them!! ! :-) Thanks.

Is it that you are worried (when talking) that the person isn't getting enough information? I don't know if I rattle on, but I do know I go off on tangents and take for ever to just 'spit out what I'm trying to say.' It's like I have all this information in my head, and the person will be woefully uninformed if I don't say all the (to me) relevent information. 8)

I still have problems with that after 58 years. It's getting better though. I think I've started to learn that it's not just a matter of sharing my thoughts on a matter as they occur to me, I have to try to think of a headline to give them, a summary, the bottom line. Otherwise it's all "was it a Tuesday or a Wednesday, oh no I had to feed the cat so it must have been October, same night as that other thing with the yellow finish, although when you come to think of it I could never see anything wrong with the green ones, blah blah." I think I've developed some kind of a sense of when that's happening, and that helps me to avoid it. But then I can go quiet instead, and it can be hard to create that summary quickly enough.

My social skills coach is teaching me to be aware of this and to keep my interjections in converstations to 2-3 sentences. I am starting to actually plan it out and count the sentences. That will stop the behavior. :)

Zelda, don't always take what people say as absolute truth or absolute falsehood. You are both supposed to comform and be yourself but only to certain extents. Don't consider either as it's all or nothing, true or false, or on, or off. As an analogy, consider it like a dimmer switch for a light instead of an on and off switch. Consider it like a sliding scale. Better yet, think of it like the Autism Spectrum with varying degrees of the different traits. For example, don't think of it as you're literal or you're not. Think of it some are mostly literal and some are somewhat literal. I believe this is the missing premises that you're missing.
