Im trying to apply for a job, and i'm torn between mentioning it or not. Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) from putting it on an application form? i'm thinking will it put them off ( i know it shouldnt, but it might) or should i be honest, otherwise i might end up doing a job that i find impossible because there's too much talking to new people? i thought about just saying i am not confident with talking to people, and not mentioning the word Aspergers, but then does that look like im just being a bit pethetic?

has anyone actually been turned down for a job because of it?

I think the standard approach is to not put it on an application or resume. Whether you disclose before starting work is highly dependent on the type of work. You cannot legally be denied employment for having Asperger's unless it materially effect your ability to do the work. But employers that don't want you around will make up some other reason.

I would definitely not put it on there. You have time to decide whether or not the job is suited for you after you discuss it thoroughly with the employer, before you actually accept the job.

I'd never put it on there. The employer cannot use to deny you or fire you, but they typically don't want someone who will not be able to fully do the job. It's something I'd never disclose except to my supervisor or manager, and that's only if I knew disclosing it wouldn't risk losing my job. I've disclosed it to my supervisor, but he really doesn't care either way. He's paranoid that his bosses will come down on him so he makes sure to watch his Ps and Qs, which usually means being extra hard on me.

No I wouldn't put it on there. They can make assumptions about you thinking how it would effect you on the job and thinking you can't do this or that so it would give them a reason to not hire you.

I would definitely never tell anyone at work about it, and never mention it at a job appliement. I think people often have a wrong image of autism, and would only tell people about it that already know me quite well.

Not just, "No" but "HELLS NO". Too much misunderstanding RE autism. Now if you are visibly affected or if you need special services to do the job you may want to talk to it but you have no obligation to do that even.

If you're in some kind of technical, detail-oriented field: yes

If you're applying for customer service: no

Not the best thing to do by any means, but I can understand it well because I often find that I must resist the urge to to be too honest about myself... an AS trait in itself. This has gotten me into way too much trouble over the years and I usually end up making a fool of myself before I realize I should have just kept my big mouth shut to begin with.

I once had a coworker who did not lie about her drug use when applying for a job on a military contract requiring a security clearance. She went through months of more detailed investigations than usual as a result of being honest. She was not an Aspie either. Most of the rest of the world just lies about everything and that seems to be what is expected these days... while at the same time they saddle you with all kinds of threats from the blood sucking lawyer about not lying.

Only if you don't want the job.

Unless it's a really obvious disability, even if you need support I'd wait until after the job is secured. And if you don't need any accomodations, I wouldn't bring it up.

I never got a job through an interview so I guess it might actually explain why I am a little different.

Not a good idea. 8O
All kinds of horrible assumptions will likely be made about you.

Assumptions are being made regardless since I have never gotten a descent job through an interview. All my jobs I have ever gotten I got them before being diagnosed. I had the time for an evaluation because I was laid off from one I held for 9 years. I stay with crap jobs for decades when I can get them.

Yeah, true enough I guess.
But it just seems much too risky to set yourself up for a fall before you've even got your foot in the door.
