Is this a characteristic of autism/aspergers to want to laugh at inappropriate times or have the urge to laugh?Since I wonder if anyone of you here has had this happened when you find a situation boring i.e sitting in a class listening to lectures. In order to bot continue being bored you tune out, thing of other things and imagine funny things that have happened in the past. Then you feel like you have to laugh.

So does anyone here feel like when being in a boring situation you tune out and think of other things like what plans you have for the weekend, including something funny that you've seen on TV?

I'm TERRIBLE about that! It seems to usually happen at a time or place when/where I'm supposed to stay very quiet or solemn, such as in a library, during a church service or something similar, or even when I'm being scolded. The urge to laugh becomes overwhelming, even as I try to push away all thoughts of the funny thing I thought about. All that does is make EVERYTHING funny, it seems.
This, as you may have guessed, has gotten me into considerable trouble in the past...

Glad to know I'm no t the only one.

I'm similar to Thingy- when I'm "in trouble", it's hilarious to me,
and the greater the social expectation to be quiet or solemn in a particular place,
the greater my urge to laugh.

There was a horrible incident my senior year of high school where my English teacher was telling us how something she saw in the hallway was

TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE

and I burst out with the most obnoxious guffaw,
and everyone else's reactions only made me laugh harder.

Yes, I do this a ton. I laugh greatly at the smallest things, I seem to be hypersensitive to funny stimuli. Like the thread Mdyar posted, often I laugh at bad news, I don't know why...

Just reading posts in this and that thread made me laugh a lot, partly from realizing I do this a lot.

Sort of.

If I am in a movie or something and see something that I think is funny, but no one else does, also, I don't laugh at parts of the movie that everyone else laughs at.

At 15, I remember helping someone hold in position/ or help install an extra fuel tank on their truck .

It fell down for some reason while we were down on the concrete drive under the truck, and I had my usual laughing gas attack and the other person said, "what's so *insert expletive* funny?

I managed to keep the audible part muted, but I shaking so hard while holding it in.

Inapropriate emotional expression... crossed wires inserting the wrong emotional response into the situation. There is the nervous laugh and then there is finding humor in something unhumorous. I think there is a big difference there.

I find most horror movies funny - the worse the gore and splatter, the funnier it is. Either I'm a total psychopath or my wires are crossed. Seeing how I abhor violence in real life, I assume its the latter.

I've got other crossed wires too. Anger, sadness...

I did a pretty good job at doing that here on WP, this morning.

Hm...that reminds me of myself, in that I have never felt anger when wronged, merely sadness.

I do feel anger on behalf of others when they are deliberately hurt or oppressed.

PS I'm not ignoring your message, it just takes me forever to compose a reply. :D

^^^ this, very much so! I can turn into an instant pitbull in the defense of others. But getting angry in my own defense never occurs to me.

Then, when my mother died - I was devastated but I never cried. I was almost panicked because I KNEW something was wrong with me. I SHOULD have been bawling my eyes out but I never did. I went through the stages of grieving but I never had that soul shaking sadness or the tears that should have accompanied it. I suppose I should be grateful for that but I'm not. I actually feel cheated.

(take your time - no hurry on the repsonse! )

I have a reputation for doing this.

My thoughts tend to wander onto something funny, prompting me to laugh at completely inappropriate times.

My mom once said to me, "Chris, you have a very joyful presence. Even at very strange times. I've seen you giggle when you get the news that some distant relative has died."

Sooner or later, I'm going to start laughing like this guy.

I once laughed when my friend told me about how his (currently) ex gf killed all his cats and he had to bury them. I have no idea why I did, maybe because I find it hard to imagine that friend being sentimental, but I felt awful about it.

People always ask me "what's so funny?" even when I'm not laughing. I can't even think about funny things to myself without someone asking me that. But as far as inappropriate situations go, I don't think I've ever busted out laughing at the wrong time.

Yes---I have often laughed at things not meant to be funny---or situations that might be considered innapropriate to laugh at.
