i am 100% positive of being an aspie,
but i think about it and and wonder what are the benifits of receiving a formal diagnosis,

i can think of ways more diagnosis could be used against you,
the few possible positive situations that i can think of are:

a) sympathy from the legal system if you were in legal trouble
b) wanting an employer to conform to certain needs
c) easier getting the doctor to listen to isssues (anxiety/depression)

would like to find a therapist specializing in autism/as, would i need a diagnosis for a referall to one of these?

open to ideas, don't know if i should get diagnosed or not

I have a few reasons NOT to seek diagnosis:

1. You DON'T want others to know. They will treat you differently. Ever told anyone you're bi-polar? They will act carefully around you and/or will pay too much/not enough attention to your mood swings. Same with AS: "It's OK....Pease don't scream!! !"

2. Others will treat you as an "as*hole Aspie" since Asperger's is over-diagnosed. I get the same with my ADHD, even though I'm one of the few who actually have it! !!

3. If you're under the age of 21, you might get put into Special Education classes.

I was diagnosed when I was about 10 and went to a special needs school when I was 11. In terms of helping me to understand the world and cope with the many irrational rules underpinning social interaction, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I would be nowhere near as good at socialising with NTs now if I hadn't had that diagnosis.

Well if you do get diagnosed you don't have to tell anybody unless you think it will help your situation.
And can get help finding and keeping a job if you are diagnosed.

You need to ask your GP for a referral to either a psychologist or psychiatrist to get diagnosed.

One positive about being diagnosed is that you feel so much better that all your symptoms are explained and you can talk to people that relate to your issues.

No, people treat you like that because 1) They don't believe ADHD is a serious disorder and 2) Think you are making excuses. Neither is true of course. I have ADHD too.
Hyperactive ADHD may be overdiagnosed but combined and inattentive are not. Inattentive ADHD is actually underdiagnosed.

I'm considering returning to school to finish my degree. With a formal diagnosis I can get some accommodations through the university's Office of Disabilities.

Do people really believe AS and ADHD are so horrendously overdiagnosed?

They're hot topics in the media and if it's on the news it's gotta be true, right? :P
It just shows how ignorant people still are. Hell, I know people that think people with depression and anxiety are weak. I know, let's take em out. I mean with guns and stuff.

Note for mods: Not real guns. Plastic guns. Full of water. And piranhas. Scratch that last one.

I recently heard the suggestion that AS and ADHD are trendy diagnoses to absolve children and parents of responsibility and let the children get away with everything. I am not sure what people think happens once a child gets a diagnostic label, but I am not sure it quite works this way.

Many qoutes here:
Many people's opinion on Asperger's is 1) a Math savant with zero social skills 2) "BS Syndrome". 3) "You just wanna give an excuse to any LAZY-ASS guy who don't WANT to have friends!"
Many people's opinion on ADHD is 1) the system's plot to drug different kids into the norm 2) same but to keep quiet 3) "You have Attention-Deficit-BULLSHIT-Disorder!" 4) "You just give a label to any LAZY-ASS kid who just don't WANT to study!"
The reason to me being accused as a lazy liar is because in Israel, ADHD is Bipolar & Asperger's combined.
Quote:
Does Dd/adhd Really Exist?

epidemiological survey conducted in England, only two children out of 2,199 were diagnosed as hyperactive whereas in Israel, 28% of children were rated by teachers...
(sources here=)
28% compared to 0.09095043201% of all children is over-diagnosis in all points of view, if you ask me.

Doesn't that mean you have no high school diploma?
