It is possible a diagnosis of AS at 8 months of age? I read that story in the net, I found interesting because it occurred in my hometown, and much probably at my workplace (I work at an health institution).

Quote:
I have a girl with [Asperger Syndrome]…

My daughter today has 9 moths, she doesn’t sit, doesn’t smile, doesn’t say anything nor mumble, does not have strength in the body, does repetitively the same thing, like spending hours looking to the hands, or headbanging to the bed. And only beging to pick objects with 7 months…

It was her physiotherapist who begin to see that the baby was “strange” for the age, she did not express herself, nor an “Hi”, nor a smile, and spend all the treatment looking to the left hand, during 30 minutes…

The physiotherapist begin to ask questions about her development, she was 4 months and she not want to pick the toys, did not turn herself, did not follow the objects, etc. The 6 months were coming and nothing changed, and the therapist wento to talk with the paediatric nurses (…) and they did some tests. She failed all the test, excepting the test of raising her head… All week I wento to the paediatric service, until they send me to the best doctor… 8 months, “the girl has Asperger Syndrome”, the symptoms show that, it is a rare disease, even more in girls, I have a cousin with that disease…

However, I think that diagnosis very strange

there could be any number of things wrong with that baby. if they didn't already they need to do a brainscan and bloodwork. it could be aspergers but uh, my aspie babies didn't have those kinds of problems. i guess some might but it sounds more serious to me maybe full-blown autism. i don't know but it doesn't sound right to me.

I can see getting an autism diagnosis, but that is too early to receive an Asperger's diagnosis. It sounds like the psychologist doesn't know what they are doing.

I think it is strange also. Since there is no clear neurophysiological clue for autism or AS at such an early age I would doubt that diagnosis greatly.

It's not very unusual for an 8 month old to not talk. It sounds like a very rare form of autism (the non-regressive type), definitely not AS, or could be anything really. The fact that she was diagnosed with AS show laziness on the doctor's part.

My aspie was delayed in some milestones by about 3 months. Looking back she had latch problems at birth that lasted for about 4 months - coordination issues. Her very first word was 'MONKEY" screeched loud and clear in the bathtub at about 7 months old. Then nothing for another 3 months. She was always clumsy and uncoordinated, so much so she refused to run until she was nearly 5 because she fell down so much. She was diagnosed at 3 1/2 with PDD and AS at 8 1/2.

I have no doubt the signs of autism are there very early on. How they can say for certain which form of autism is the sketchy part. And also disturbing is how many misconceptions there are in that original story... Obviously the baby has something pretty dramatic going on if she is missing those major milestones. I'm surprised there was no talk of consult with a pediatric neurologist especially for the lack of typical movement.

autism still can't be reliably diagnosed until 18 months.........some say 2 years...........a milder form (or AS) would probably not be reliably diagnosed until after 18 months. For him to say definitively that she doesn't have it is not right. Sometimes they identify children as "at risk for autism" and do intervention earlier than 18 months.......this might be beneficial for the child even if she only has a developmental delay or an intellectual disability, and may be very beneficial if she is autistic.

It doesn't sound like a ASD to me. It sounds more like CP.

My ASD son was crawling at 6 months, sitting at 7 months and stacking cups in order by 8 months. he didn't talk until he was over 3.

My daughter who is undxed as of now at 2 was talking at 10 months, crawling at 13 months, walking at 13 months, sitting at 15 months. Now at just over 2 can draw some letters and knows the rest, can count to 20, draws shapes including trapezium and rhombus ect and can say "1/2 past number on clock".

How at that age is it determined that there is a significant language delay. at the moment, that is the only major difference between HFA and Low Functioning Aspergers (bring on the DSMV).
