I am so sick of reading this online by people who claim to know all about ASDs. I want to tell them if you work with students with ASDs, they are probably not those on the more mild side. I am known for being very witty, and using sarcasm. I have more trouble understanding others, but I still get sarcasm if there's a change in voice tone and can understand some jokes (again, an obvious change in voice helps me). I also hear a lot we can't use metaphors when I can. I know quite a lot actually. I was more literal as a child. I still take some things literally, but when someone says "it's raining cats and dogs" I know what they mean, and I didn't have much trouble learning metaphors and idioms as a child.

I actually think people like me are harder to treat because we can do someething, yet not understand it as well in others. So it's hard to define our true level.

I am annoyed because people online will say you can't post on a forum if you have AS, especially if it isn't your special interest.

When someone says it's raining cats and dogs, I visualize cats and dogs falling from the sky. Then I remember what it actually means. I have that delay with most idioms.

I have a sense of humor and can pull off witty. It seems to me that a lot of autistic people have a sense of humor. The sometimes annoying part is taking someone else's jokes literally and thus missing them. I don't know how many times someone complained that I needed a joke explained, thus "ruining it."

My problem is i will just look at them and ask them if a comma is needed in their joke. Eg "It's raining, cats and dogs." I saw a comic that someone sent recently that did the same thing. The sender posted lol lol lol a lot after it. :? So isn't that what is meant?

I also don't find slapstick funny or most stand up comediens funny... Oh lets hit someone in the head to make them fall over, ha ha OR well someone has a period, their hormones are haywire ha ha ha.

I prefer metaphor jokes. :D

Rule of thumb

Anything written about aspergers or autism. Presume BS until proven otherwise

I make a joke out of almost everything. I spend a lot of time hiding behind humour when I don't understand something.

Let's just call it the prime directive, keep it simple

I was taught to not add the redundant "s" sound, so that is how I do things here on Alex' site.

I only understand the humour that I wish to understand.

Yes, I don't understand that narrow view of thinking. I have a strong sense of humor. I actually went through a 2-year period where my special interest was Chicago comedy clubs. I went to every single improv set at the Second City mainstage. I'm actually more sensitive than NTs when it comes to humor. I am very easily entertained.

As far as metaphors and idioms, I have enough sense to know not to take some things literally. When my high school english teacher gave us the assignment to think of our own metaphors, I was totally lost, but I learned with practice. I'm actually reading Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships by Dr. Grandin and Sean Barron. Both authors make use of metaphors and analogies, and they were both diagnosed with more severe cases of HFA than anything I have. The clinician I'm working with tried to correct herself when she used an idiom: "throw you into the shark pit" (she was talking about social scenes). I had to tell her that I can understand her just fine.

I think with some of us, our sense of humor is different than the norm thus we're told we have no sense of humour. For example, dirty jokes are rarely funny for me but despite my telling extended family (pre stopping talking to them) that I fully understood the joke, they kept on trying to explain because I didn't laugh. My Mother had to step in and explain "She understands the joke, she just doesn't find it funny".

An example of a joke I like:
What happened when the cow half jumped over the fence?
Answer: Udder distruction.

The problem is that all of us are so different, so whichever characteristic or symptom people associate with Asperger's syndrome, it will only be true for some of us, but most people seem to think that since we all have the same "disorder", then all of us must be exactly the same.

I hate the stereotypes and assumptions people make about all of us because of something that only some of us have. Aspies don't have a sense of humor. Aspies cannot lie. Aspies can't understand sarcasm. Aspies can't be outgoing. Aspies this and aspies that. I'm so tired of people who think that all of those things apply 100% to every aspie and that whoever doesn't have some of the stereotypical characteristics can't really have AS.

I think a new phrase has been coined:

Laz's First Law of Autism:

"With anything written about Aspergers or Autism, presume is BS until proven otherwise."

:D

For me, oh I most definitely have a sense of humor, though I'm known for having a very odd one lol.

My biggest problem tends to be when telling them, I have to always remember to try and see if it would make sense to the other person, alot of my jokes tend to be out there and without context or knowledge about that area, its just like wtf how is that a joke.

When it comes to other peoples jokes, a lot I find not so funny, though I do understand and get the "point" of the joke, and its incredibly rare for me to actually laugh, or to be bustin up in stitches.
