I have read many articles of the symptoms of Asperger Syndrome and there is a symptom related to "awkwardness with posture". I know what posture is and I know what awkward is, but what the hell does this mean? Can someone describe to me what one who's posture is awkward would look like? If you can find a picture of this can you post it?

I've noticed that my lower back tends to hunch out abnormally when I sit, but if I straighten up I look like everyone else. That is uncomfortable. I've been to the chiropractor and there is nothing wrong with my back via x-rays. What the hell are they talking about?

Awkwardness in posture results in not having the innate feeling of how to carry oneself while walking or standing. It can manifest via under- or over-exaggerated arm movement, too much swaying, crookedness...

I assume they are talking about how you sit or stand or walk. Like in the old home movies my dad took when I was a kid, there are parts in the videos where I looked awkward as I sat and I can remember my mom trying to show me how to stand but I always stood a different way because the normal way felt uncomfortable. Mom had pointed out how I have my head forward instead of back so she try and push it back. I also remember mom telling em I walked different as a child because the normal way didn't feel right for me. No matter what she did, I just wouldn't do it because it didn't feel right. It was like having to concentrate more and doing work outs to keep doing it, lot of will power to keep going and it was too much work. She never tried punishing me for it. I also sit with my back hunched and I remember as a kid, some teachers would make me keep it straight and it was a torture because it didn't feel right.

Yes it's how you sit or stand. I have terrible posture but then my NT mommy does too! I had the awkward walk as well........actually my friends brother once told me that he could "recognize my awkward gait from a mile away" so when looking out his balcony window he could see me walking to the apartment before my body shape was visible! 8O

Does head count? I tend to sit with it forward than back. Or is that part of sitting too?

I think we may either slouch a lot or sit unusually rigid.

It's a combination of a few factors.

1. Poor proprioception. People with AS can find it difficult to accurately gauge the position of their limbs. Having a fuzzy sense of balance and where one's feet are can produce an odd gait.

2. A kind of mindblindness in that when one is in a posture which feels comfortable, it doesn't really enter into one's thoughts how others may view this posture. How the posture looks may be entirely neglected.

3. Self-consciousness. An aspie can know that they move and carry themselves differently due to poor proprioception and lack of thought to how others will regard them. The aspie will then try to focus on their movements to try to minimize the awkwardness. This usually only makes the movements even more affected and noticeable.

When I walk, I find myself moving with a stomping gait, stepping on the ball of my foot, while swinging my arms rather freely. If I start to think about how I look to others, I may try to modulate my pace and the movement of my arms- which can result in me swinging to the other extreme of not enough movement one would normally expect. Instead of seeing a person flailing their arms, other people will see a person walking oddly stiffly and mechanically.
