In this thread I remarked:

Quote:
The longer this thread goes on, the more I realize that I've brushed into almost all of these special interests at one time or another, but almost always in very brief bursts. A week or two, sometimes much longer.

Most were kind of interstitial: they occupied me in between the shift of two much more intense interests. One ebbs, then a sudden and intense interest in, say, urban exploration photo-essays appears, then a few more short interests cycle until I'm fully on the track of my next major interest. It's like my mind is throwing things at me to keep me occupied while it shifts into another gear.

I'd be curious to have a thread where we can actually keep track of how our interests evolve. Say, noting one's open tabs at intervals, or the last 3 books purchased.

I bet that even those people with a single, decades-spanning interest, have had microflirts with other subjects. They may just not remember that week where they got bored and ended up reading everything possible on Japanese tea ceremonies and the like, before getting right back to their main interest.

I'm curious about whether others have a similar pattern to mine. I think of my brief focused interests as fulfilling much the same role as cocaine for Sherlock Holmes in between cases: something to stimulate myself in the interval between two extremely absorbing interests.

Do you recall how your special interests have changed and flowed and evolved out of each other? Think back to the interval between two very strong interests: what did you focus on in that interval while one waxed and the other waned?

Photography ↔ History ↔ Paranormal ↔ Theology ↔ Yoga ↔ Fitness/Health ↔ Herbalism ↔ Nature ↔ Photography ↔ Firefighters ↔ Sex ↔ Food/Artisan Baking ↔ Romance ↔ Comedy...

You mean like that?

Mine are very stable at the moment. It's just been astrology for weeks now.

As a child it was bank forms (could not go into a bank without coming out with a pile of bank forms), then lining up toy cars, then it was horses (had my own pony for a while), then it was museums, then it was psychology, then it was studying heritage studies (lots of work on museums), then it went to para-psychology, then digital photography very briefly, then it went to jigsaw puzzles, then health and fitness, then para-psychology, then cross stitching, then sex, then health and fitness and now its sequin art lol.

And god help me but today I am finding myself enjoying putting up a flat pack just a bit too much lol...not to mention lusting over the screwdriver set I bought that has more bits than I know what to do with right now (not for long though lol). I also have my eye on some DIY books lol.

I recycle the same 3 general interests. They typically occur in spurts of 3-4 months but I've gone years where I only did 1 of my 3 interests. But that isn't my norm. My norm is 3-4 months on one of my interests, then I hop back and forth from each of my 3 interests but I often sub-specialize:

1. Metaphysics/Philosophy of physics.

2. Psychopharmacology and Mental illness.

3. Strength training/bodybuilding and Nutrition

My current sub-specialities:

1. Reconciling how Bohm's interpretation of QM may give us a hint of how to unify the mental/qualia with the "physical"/body; that is, the mind-body problem.

2. Is introversion/HSP on the AS continuum/spectrum?

3. Is the paleolitic diet (Eaton, etc.) the best approach to optimize health and minimize fat gain? Is penis enlargement possible or a scam?

When I was really young it was collecting and counting random objects from when my mother took me on walks (stones, shells and twigs are good examples). Then from about 6 to 11 it was back and forth between dinosaurs and space. Then it was dogs for a while, then cats, and for the past 2 years I've been collecting free product samples and storing them in a large box in my bedroom. I'm also a bit fixated with the paper shredder. I can happily spend hours shredding old documents for my mother. I haven't noticed any patterns in my interests.

From 6-10 y.o. - imaginary adventures in my head (at "paracosm" level - creating complex fantasies with plots, characters, etc, and living the fantasy during months)
From 7-10 y.o. - military issues (specially WWII)
From 9-13 y.o. - science, nature
From 9 y.o. - history
From 12 y.o. - politics (the interest in history merged with that)

From 6-12 y.o. - Disney comic books
From 11 y.o. - computers (programming)
From 15 y.o. - psychology
