"D-day" expression?
So someone on facebook had a status saying "12-hours 'till d-day" and she went to a different university and so I thought that "d-day" was some insider thing only those who went to the university knew about. So I attempted to pull a joke and said something like "D-Day? When the Allies raided the beaches of Normandy in Northern France?" I even insulted her intelligence saying that she might not know what I was talking about and it was from history class. Then she replied saying that its a common saying meaning that something good was going to happen and I realized that she meant she will be done her exams in 12 hours.
Its actually pretty funny. I responded saying "I pulled a Sheldon Cooper". (Sheldon from Big Bang Theory). I'm glad she is not an aspie or else she would be like "What do you mean you pulled a character from a TV show?" LOL!!
Ahh Sheldon Cooper moments. I've done many of those. I've had to restrain myself from doing it on Facebook.

Clearly she has no understanding of history. A more appropriate phrase would be "12 hours til VE-Day".

I think the expression means any big thing thats happening, maybe not nessarily a happy or joyous event?
I think you are right. It is meant for a pending event of significant consequence. Her usage of it is a dumbing down of the original meaning, IMHO.
Oh well.

A more appropriate phrase would be "12 hours until H-Hour."
