I just saw my university counsellor today for the first time. She told me that there are apparently 4 stages of acceptance of Asperger's diagnosis and asked me at which one I was. The first stage is denial, (then I phased out) and the last stage is feeling the need to appear to be NT when it is necessary but feeling comfortable showing your traits in an accepting environment. I told her that I've never heard about these four stages, and she then said that they're from Tony Attwood.

I then came home and looked it up, but only came across four stages of friendship that Attwood mentions in his "The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome". Have you ever heard about anything similar?

Holy CRAP! Google is FAST!

I just Googled

Tony Atwood "4 stages of acceptance"

Try it! Copy and paste that line exactly as it is, with the quotes! See what you come up with! 8O

(Sorry no, no answers)

It is. Unfortunately, if this thread is the only thing it's coming up with (I also tried substituting Asperger's for Tony Atwood), it kind of makes me wonder where she heard about or read that.

strangely if you google the phrase this thread now appears! Does no one have Attwood's book here? I can find a copy in the Library, I think

All I've been able to find are "Seven stages of Asperger Awareness."

Seven Stages of Asperger's Awareness

Don't know if it's the same, but I bet the same ideas are in it somewhere.

He must have been looking at a different set of people than me.

I just kinda went with a shrug, "that fits".

Well, if we're talking post-diagnosis, not post-realisation, I had one stage: "Well, DUH."

Yeah, the only people in denial seem to be the people around me. The first time I heard about asperger's I knew it was an answer. Probably why I won't seek a diagnosis because I would have to fight with certain people that would refuse to accept it.

Doing a amazon.com look inside search for "stages of acceptance" nothing came up related to this. So it's not from the complete guide to AS book he wrote, or if it is its on one of the blocked pages on amazon.

I do a LOT of internet searching, and I'm pretty darned good at it if I say so myself. I find crap all the time nobody else seems to find. If Tony Atwood said it, it's VERY hard to believe it isn't anywhere on the Internet, and it clearly isn't. I'm wondering if your counselor's memory is a bit foggy. Even if he said it at a lecture, and it hasn't been in a book yet, somebody, somewhere should have quoted it by now.

I can't find anything even taking his name out of it, other than that seven stages of awareness.

I remember seeing something similar on AS Partners and ASD Relationships. I think it was the seven stages of denial and then they go onto accepting it.
