Before I improved socially, I noticed that sometimes that while I was in the middle of a conversation, I would say things and people would not respond directly to what I said, but instead be silent for a few seconds and move on to another topic. I used to think that maybe they did not understand what I said, so that I repeated it several times louder and more clearly. Now, I realize, that they heard perfectly well what I said, and I was an idiot repeating myself like a parrot. I was focused on what I wanted rather than what they wanted.
People can be silent and not respond directly to what you said for several reasons:
1 - They were offended by what you said or it is too controversial to discuss in public.
2 - They do not agree with what you said but they do not want to start an argument.
3 - They do not care about what you said, and they don't want to have a discussion about it.
4 - Some things you say, people understand you well, but really don't know what to say in response.
Can anyone relate?
