As the title says, do you have a "superpower"? By that I mean, is there something that you do really well, especially when compared to other people around you? It can be anything, from being really good at Tetris to solving complex math problem to having a good sense of direction.

I just got asked this question recently, and I think mine is language learning. I love learning new languages... so far, other than English, I've studied Japanese, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, French, and Korean. I'm not fluent (except maybe English and Japanese), but it's something that I really enjoy. Of all of my classes, they were the ones that I was always guaranteed an "A" in.

I can crank out multi-thousand word essays, fully cross-referenced, in a matter of hours, and get 90> marks for them. This has saved my procrastinating ass on several occasions. Is that a super power? :P

I've always been very good at problem solving. My common sense and reasoning abilities are well beyond that of most people I know. Many people tell me that I am very creative, although I have still yet to figure out what exactly this means. Superpower? Not really, but it is something I can brag about, although I choose not to.

If I had a superpower it would be the same as yours, syrella. I forget everything I learn though and get bored with a language before I learn much. So no I don't have a superpower I guess!

Simplifying complex material without over-simplification in a way everybody can understand.
I think I should become a educational book writer or a teacher :chin:.

Figuring out how to do something with very limited tools, and/or coming up with a repair
solution that might involve a paperclip, a sliver of a credit card, some makeup removal foam
pads or a not quite right part scavenged from something else.

I'm a very fast learner, assuming I'm interested in whatever it is that I'm learning. But then again, this is supposed to be an Asperger's trait. So yeah...

Of course, but then, I'm probably a Savant. When I first came here I talked a lot about my talents, but I've become self-conscious about going on about it, and I think all things considered, I will refrain from repeating myself here. There are certainly people here that put me in the shade.

The problem with that is, as I see it, the purpose of this board is for Aspies to help each other, and to feel less alone in the world. I'm fine with this thread as long as we are sharing things we have in common, and not comparing to see who has the coolest Superpower. I'm not saying I've seen that so far, but I don't want to be the one to start it. I've used my talents to help me become functional and my best advice to everyone is to find a way to apply your Superpower to the real world. Not that I'm banging the drum for everyone to go out and start acting like NTs, but sometimes it's brutally necessary. It is in my case. For me now it's make my own way or starve.

I think that every Aspie has some special power, even if it's something only they know about, and we should cherish them.

No, I am poor to slightly above average at everything. My IQ is like 115 or something, which seems low for an aspie.

Incredible eyesight. I can read road signs well before anyone else. All my family wear glasses except me, and I read a lot.

You bring up a good point. I wasn't trying to brag, and I wasn't trying to encourage others to do so either. I just thought it'd be fun if everyone shared something they are "good" at. I think everyone, especially Aspies, have something that they do really well. Being proud of that skill doesn't mean that you have to be arrogant about it. :)

And that is also true... the "superpower" isn't necessarily useful. I haven't found a great deal of usage for my language learning apart from personal enjoyment. Maybe one day I'll find a way to put it to good use.

That's a talent too, though, isn't it? Being slightly above average at everything. :) It means you are more of "jack of all trades". You may not excel at any one subject, but maybe you can find some way to use your general knowledge to your advantage.

Also, IQ doesn't really mean much, as far as I've seen. Some folks consistently score low on IQ tests, even though they happen to be quite intelligent.

I think that counts!

Essay writing was never my forte. The longer I spend on an essay, the worse they get. I once had a teacher announce in front of the whole class that my essay was so interesting and thought-provoking that she even had her husband read it. Unfortunately, because it got too off-topic, she wasn't able to give me more than a C for it. Go figure.
