This is often so difficult for me. What to give, when and how. things people give me often don't make sense except that I understand it is a convention. Once in awhile it seems natural in either direction. The more frequent times that it doesn't cause a lot of consternation. Do others experience this? Have you figured out systems to cope?

Yeah, it's really common to feel that way. I know loads of people who hate present shopping. I gave up putting a whole lot of thought in when I realised that the chances of someone liking the gift were about the same regardless of the effort put in (within limits- my aunt bought my 8 year old brother a box of tissues for Christmas one year. That didn't go down well)

As for recieving them, ah just gush. You can't go overboard. Onlookers might want to puke, but the person giving the present (and fretting as to whether you'll like it or not) will be relieved that you looove the scented candle they bought you :P

I hate getting gifts for people. I never know what they want. I stopped Christmas shopping a couple years ago. Only my husband does it. Now I would only be shopping for my son. I also don't birthday shop either. I only shop for my husband too and it's candy or chocolate I get him or coffee or tea or a game. I know he likes strategy games, Harry Potter, Zelda and dragons. I also got him a pair of pants since he only had a few pairs and thought he could use a pair to wear around at home so his work pants last him longer.

I love giving gifts but receiving them has always been uncomfortable for me. Even if I love the gift I always feel a little bewildered about how I'm supposed to react.

I'd rather give gifts than receive them.

I have some moral code about gift giving. When I give a gift I have to put a lot of effort in making it seem like the gift from me isn't just something I picked up in a spur of the moment. Like when my mum says 'just give them a gift certificate' I feel like my rules have been trodden on and burnt and have the ashes trodden on as well. My gifts have to be from the heart. But because of this rule gift buying is very exhausting for me. Holidays like Christmas become agonizing because I'm not just buying for one person.

I like my gifts to be practical than just beautiful or something a person would prefer.

Receiving gifts is hard for me because there's a lot that I want and when people buy me something not very interesting I have to feign excitement. Sometimes I do genuinely like a gift but I always have a preference.
