I'm very interested in learning sign language. Has anyone found that it helps them communicate better?

I already spent some time looking at it, picked up the alphabet in a few minutes and a few basic statements.(I am sad, overwhelmed, happy, anxious, I don't want to talk to you, ect.)

Now I've become semi-obsessed with it. My problem is, I don't have anyone I know that uses sign language. I have someone who would learn the basics, if it would help me, but other than that I am on my own! It's very hard when I don't have anyone to practice with.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Why not find someone online who speaks it (visit a forum for the deaf, maybe) and do a cam session with them over IM or something and practice.

I've thought about but I really dislike people looking at me normally and I don't usually talk to people I don't know. Unless they understood that I did not want the camera on my face, it would be very difficult.

Ah, you don't have to face the camera at your face, you could just focus it on your hands. And I understand what you mean about not liking to talk to strangers. :)

Um, let's see. Well, I would suggest volunteering in your town for some type of event for the deaf, but I'm not sure how that would work out.

Waaaay too many people for me. I don't even leave the house alone. Guess I am just difficult, huh? I may have to attempt to get over this one or just learn what I can on my own. I found several online places.
