why are NT's so much less sensitive to noise?

i was talking to my mom about them slamming and banging around next door again and i thought it was quite loud. she thought it wasn't loud enough to call the police on.

why is that? with me it seems that bass is the worst. i can easily block out dogs and such with a fan.

also, why is it that things like trains don't bug me so much? maybe the horn would, but the engines and the wheels don't bother me much. they probably would if i were trying to read or do math, but sleeping is no problem with them. i find them kinda soothing if i'm not in the need to concentrate on something, especially if they're in the distance. the sound of storms and especially wind are quite pleasurable to me.

Trains are soothing for me too except the horn.
Dont make a habit of calling the cops on your neighbors...it only bugs the cops and gets neighbors to hate you. Just knock on the door and tell them what is bothering you.
I guess you are in an apprtment complex...if so contact the appartment manager if they wont stop.

Bass probably bothers you because you are sensitive to the frequency.
I HATE shop vacs. But I am most sensitive to loud high pitched noises...it just makes me want to kill whatever is making the noise. So ya, kids are out of the question.

I don't like bass either and I try and ignore it. Luckily my neighbors don't play their music too loud often anymore.

Simple, NTs usually don't have sensory issues so things may not bother them that bother you.

I find the bass quite relaxing, actually. Rhythmetic and deep = happy Makayla. :D

WOW, either that is some loud cabnet door slamming or you are reeeeaally sensitive. You just need to move out to the boonies where the nearest neighbor is 2 blocks away.

To answer the question, NT's are described as having extra filters that we do not.

Because they are too busy checking their make-up or rearranging their pants bulge to take note of the little details :p

Most of the people are unaware of our sensitiveness which is basically caused by the lack of those extra filters.

I absolutely don't like train horns, especially the big+little horn combination, but trains can have so much noise that when I'm trying to have a nap or sleep I don't like their noise either. I don't like pulling the curtain loudly in the apartment below, coughing at night, banging the car doors, while I'm not bothered by chirps. I'm also not bothered by my colleagues talking or doing casual working noises, like typing, stapling etc. They were surprised when I told them I'm not a bit bothered by a little singing.

I suppose there is an underlying cognitive reason for these issues. When I suspect the noise would be much quieter with a little heed or attention, my tolerance is much weaker, and vice verse.

I don't know but I like the way you phrase the question. :)

It's probably because they don't have the same reaction in the brain from the nerve signals that we have. NT people can somehow "ignore" an offensive (to us) noise, which may or may not be loud in volume. There are some noises which are exceedingly loud, and I'm fine with them, whereas NT people are truly irritated by the same. For my auditory hypersensitivity, it takes certain types of noise to set it off. Worst might be a whining or squealing power supply for a computer, phone charger, etc. Other people can't hear it until I point it out, and then they claim it's barely noticeable even if they listen hard. To me, it's an earth-shattering disturbance which completely disrupts my thoughts and other senses. On the other hand, I can stand right under a tornado siren, and listen to it blare all day... No problem.

NTs still hear noise at the same level as Aspies can, but I think we're more alert and aware than NTs are, which automatically makes the brain interpret the sounds differently.

Not all noises hurt my ears. They just agitate me, and sometimes even frighten me. I'm not sure why noise frightens Aspies, even if it doesn't hurt our ears.

I have a friend with ADHD (but not Autistic), and he used to hold his hands over his ears nearly all the time when he was little. And I also have a friend with Fragile-X who doesn't like loud noises either. So it seems that other disabilities aswell can affect the way they hear loud noises. I wonder why?

God, I wish I was NT!! !! I bloody do!! !!

Whenever that sort of thing happens I call everyone deaf. Except until they talk and their speech seems slurred. But then again understanding oters like me is fine so maybe there are differences in speech patterns that act as cues?
