ive seen on this board people suggesting the weirdest things about aspergers.... one poster said there was scientific proof that aspies don't drink or smoke. and some have even suggested that there is a physical way to detect autism like facial features or something... some have even suggested that aspies are less attractive and clean. where is this stuff coming from!? as far as i know none of any of this is a fact by any means but why do some of us assume that all aspies are like themselves?

I don't think there's a physical way to detect autism one hundred percent of the time. The facial anomaly possibility deserves some looking into. It doesn't mean everyone with autism has facial anomalies. It would be interesting to see exactly who has them and who doesn't and figure out if it means anything.

Less clean? Ha! I am a hygiene freak; my hands are borderline on fire from where I've washed them so much. I mainline on the shower gel as well.

The only thing you would notice about me physically is my odd walk; I don't move my arms.

Drinking? Well it's a perfect way to forget all my bad Aspie traits, for a few hours. :) Smoking I've tried but I'm not a smoker.

Well, scientific proof isn't absolute proof. You can always tell who the scientists aren't by quotes like that. "Studies show that..." "There is scientific proof that..." Science has theories, not facts. There are no scientific facts, although some things are universally regarded as true, and if they weren't, then among other things, this board wouldn't even exist.

There are plenty of Aspies who drink and smoke. They just don't usually do it, mainly because it doesn't do anything for them in most cases. As for facial features, that's true of anything, not just Aspergers. Everyone has certain facial features. Ever notice how science geeks always wear glasses? Is there a reason for that? Why do womanizers always seem to have similar builds and facial features? So maybe there is some truth to that. Most people with AS I've met do have facial features in common, but a lot of it is the look on their face, not just the face itself. People with AS relax a lot easier (at least their face muscles do LOL)

So, there're no such things as laws of physics...

Funny, huh?

Such assertions sometimes come from projection, naivete or disinformation. Also don't forget you're on the internet and you'll get all kinds - the lack of more profound knowledge about people and life or sweeping generalisations are not uncommon .

Wow, did you find this in an even remotely respectable study? 8O. It defiles both language and logic.

Oh, you mean Aspies are supposed to be less good looking? Whereas I had read that they were supposed to be MORE good looking....many of them having "angelic faces" and all....(believe it or not, I´ve actually read that in books about Asperger´s Syndrome!!)

Seriously, I think many Aspies may write about these things because misinformation is rampant.....in books, on the internet, etc. People make all kinds of rash generalizations, based on nothing. I have even read some preposterous things written by the so-called "experts". So, in a way, I can see where these strange ideas are coming from.

Eh. Some people with AS/autism have similar features and may have a few traits in common. It doesn't mean everyone is like that.

For the record I am:

Short.
Look younger than I actually am.
Have an odd shaped cranium.
Have odd posture.
Can go for days without washing.
I don't wear makeup or spend much time making myself look presentable.
Physically you can tell I'm autistic by my actions and blank eyed stare.

Not on a quantum level.

Maybe it's just human nature. I think NTs are guilty of the same thing when they assume that we are like them.

They probably didn't understand the sarcasm. There was sarcasm right? I mean I got what you meant.

Doesn't the definition of "evidence" entails that it's supposed to prove, not suggest?

*edit - sorry, were you sarcastic? I'm a bit off tonight.

It is a phrase that amuses me because it gets used in science press so much. But really, science stories in the news do a lot of silly things:

Edit: Yes, I was sarcastic. I think I use sarcasm poorly because I mainly like the wordplay instead of using it just to be mean.

I see and apologise, the phrase is indeed amusing in its absurdity.

I'm probably old and old fashioned - I can't seem to see the difference between most "science press" and the usual tabloid drivel, so I just avoid it
